Who said NASCAR wasn't exciting?
Jeff Gordon and Clint Bowyer battled it out on and off the track Sunday before the finish of the AdvoCare 500 at Phoenix International Raceway. Bowyer traded paint with Gordon‘s car on lap 305 of the race. Then on the second-to-last lap, Gordon sent Bowyer into the wall, taking out Joey Lagano in the process. That stopped the race, triggering a green-white finish and a massive brawl in the garage area.
Gordon and a member of Bowyer's pit crew began the fight - which escalated when members of both crews got involved. Then Bowyer got out of his car (at the 2:21 mark) and in a move last seen on Monday Night Raw sprinted all the way from his smashed car on pit road to the trailer area looking to join in the fight. ESPN's Alan Bestwick and Dale Jarrett offer the blow-by-blow commentary. Bowyer's crew chief is interviewed after the fight and says a bad word on live TV.
"Things just got escalated over the year, and I'd just had it. Clint has run into me numerous times, wrecked me, and he got into me on the back straightaway and pretty much ruined our day. I've had it, fed up with it and I got him back," Gordon said after the race.
Not that anyone noticed, but Kevin Harvick won the race and Brad Keselowski reclaimed the Sprint Cup Chase lead.
Round 2 of this melee takes place during the NASCAR season finale at Homestead Miami Speedway in South Florida next Sunday.
