What's in a name?

These days, when that name is Alex Rodriguez, pretty much anything.

Alex Rodriguez of the Yankees has been vilified of late, here, there and everywhere, most notably being consistently booed and jeered all weekend at Fenway Park.

A-Rod, who carries both baseball's richest contract and its longest-ever drug suspension, was the subject of a "60 Minutes" report set to air Sunday claiming he ratted out Ryan Braun and a teammate in the Biogenesis scandal.

Cheater, liar, PED user and now - the worst accusation of all - a rat.

And he claims he has no reason why he's perhaps the most hated athlete in America these days, never mind why he's been booed at Fenway all weekend.

For the name "Alex Rodriguez" - when it rains, it floods.

Viewers of the local Fox news affiliate in Orlando Saturday may have thought they were hearing someone's idea of a bad joke when a report of "Alex Rodriguez" being charged in a fatal shooting was broadcast after the Red Sox-Yankees game.

And yes, the crawl at the bottom of the screen was simultaneously detailing the "60 Minutes" report and that A-Rod's denial of it.

Perhaps someone had one-upped those folks in San Francisco who gave us Captain Sum Ting Wong and the rest of his Asiana Airlines crew last month?

A-Rod Mug.jpgNo, this was all too real. Polk County deputies Friday arrested Alexander "A-Rod" Rodriguez, 24, from Winter Haven, and 23 year old Alfred Ervin, from Haines City in the death of Carl "TJ" Booker following a drive-by shooting. Both have been charged with second-degree murder. You can make the out the "A-Rod" tattoo on Alex's neck in this mug shot.

A-Rod and Alexander "A-Rod" Rodriguez are guaranteed due process. A-Rod the overpaid, suspended third-baseman gets an arbitration hearing and [tepid] support from the players' union. Alexander Rodriguez the accused killer gets the right to counsel and a trial by jury.

No matter how angry anyone who roots for decency gets at A-Rod the baseball player and no matter how brazen his lies or how dishonest his actions, the arrest of Alexander Rodriguez serves as another somber reminder of what's real and what isn't.

The sports-world hate for and real-world fun with A-Rod the rodent resumes Sunday night at Fenway Park on ESPN.

Let the boos resume.
