And now, Anderson Silva.

Silva, the one-time UFC champion, snapped his left leg after landing a kick on Chris Weidman Saturday night in Las Vegas during their UFC Middleweight title rematch. It was a gruesome conclusion to both the fight and, possibly, Silva's career.

The end came 1:16 into the second round. Silva, 38, landed a kick on Weidman's shin before the Brazilian collapsed. "Spider" then grabbed his shattered left leg about the ankle. Weidman was defending the belt he had taken from Silva, the longest-reigning champion in the history of the sport, last July.

Weidman, a 29-year-old Long Island native, is 11-0 overall and 7-0 in UFC. He received scant credit for his previous victory. Silva held the UFC Middleweight title from 2006-13. Silva, 38, was carried from the octagon on a stretcher after being attended to by doctors for several minutes.

Weidman dominated the fight until Silva's ill-fated kick.

In the other marquee event of the night on the UFC 168 card, undefeated female champion Ronda Rousey survived a spirited challenge from Miesha Tate before getting Tate to submit to her famous "armbar" hold 58 seconds into the third round in their bantamweight title bout. The two fighters are bitter rivals and Rousey [8-0] refused to shake Tate's hand after her victory, earning a cascade of boos from the MGM Grand Garden Arena crowd.

"I got booed everywhere," Rousey, a former judo champion, told the UFC on Fox. "I'd rather be the heel. The heel is more fun and more interesting ... I needed to be the bad guy for Gotham City to have a hero."
