David Ortiz and his smartphone were in the news a lot this week.
While his selfie with the president has made international news, perhaps the most important call he made was not made public until Friday. While appearing on WEEI's "Dennis and Callahan" show before Opening Day at Fenway Park, Red Sox president Larry Lucchino was asked about the team's visit to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center on Tuesday. That followed their trip to the White House and was closed to the media.
"The contrast was so great, going from the frivolity of the White House to the seriousness," Lucchino said. "But the troops were consistently upbeat."
But not all the veterans the Red Sox players met were baseball fans.
"When Ortiz walked into the room and saw an injured vet, he went up to him and started talking baseball. The guy said: 'Thank you guys for coming, it was great to have you here, but I'm not a real big baseball fan.'"
Instead of making a gracious exit, Ortiz did one better. He asked the wounded veteran: "What are you into?"
When Ortiz learned the veteran was "a real hockey fan," he took that now-infamous Samsung phone and used it to call one his hockey BFFs, Boston Bruins forward Shawn Thornton.
"David punches into his cell phone, calls Shawn Thornton. Sean answers the phone, David says, 'I want you to meet Shawn Thornton.' Then Thornton and the vet have a few minutes to chat about hockey. It was a great moment," Lucchino said.
No selfie necessary on that one.
Well done on all counts.
