Even as a Dodger, Gonzalez to give $5k to Jimmy Fund for every HR

In his first at-bat after being traded from the Red Sox to the Dodgers in Saturday's megadeal, Adrian Gonzalez introduced himself to Los Angeles by slugging a three-run homer against the Marlins.

But just because he did it in a different uniform doesn’t mean Boston got nothing out of the blast. Last month – back when a deal like this one seemingly bordered on unconscionable – the first baseman pledged $5,000 to the Jimmy Fund for every home run he hit in the second half. And he says he’ll honor that commitment even from the other coast.

His LA introduction was his 10th tater since the All-Star break, bringing his commitment to a cool $50,000 – and there could be more to come. If he keeps his current second-half pace, he’ll go deep nine more times over the Dodgers’ final 35 contests.

That Gonzalez was asking for suggestions of a charity before he’d even landed in his new city is hardly a surprise. In addition to his Jimmy Fund contributions, it was just last Monday that he and his wife Betsy took 220 Red Sox scholars to the Target store in Dorchester and gave each of them $125 to spend toward back-to-school supplies.
