After a 12-15 June, their worst month of the season, the Rock Cats are 5-1 in July…The Twins acquired 2008 Futures Game participant, RHP Shairon Martis from the Pittsburgh Pirates and he will make his third start for the Rock Cats on Saturday at New Hampshire. Martis made 20 appearances with the Washington Nationals in 2008 and 2009, compiling a 6-6 record with a 5.33 ERA and 57 strikeouts in 106 1/3 innings. In 11 games with the Eastern League’s Altoona Curve this year he was 6-2 and in two starts with New Britain he is 0-1 with an 11.12 ERA…Right fielder Oswaldo Arcia will be making his way to Kansas City for this year’s edition of the Futures Game to be played this Sunday. He is batting .303 with New Britain since he was promoted mid-June from Ft. Myers, he has hit safely in 14 of the 17 games played with the Cats and he just had an eleven game hit streak snapped.

Thumbnail image for Fisher Cats logo.gifNew Hampshire Fisher Cats (35-49, EL Eastern 5th place - AA Toronto Blue Jays) – In the midst of the great Red Sox rehab invasion, the Fisher Cats stood firm on their home turf and have finally pried themselves out of the basement, having won five straight games. New Hampshire is outscoring their opponents 49-23 since the start of July…Jake Marisnick, the No. 3 prospect in the Blue Jays system per MLB.com, made his Double-A debut on Thursday night, going 2 for 5 with a double, RBI and a run. The outfielder, a third round pick by Toronto in 2009, was hitting .263 with 31 extra-base hits, 38 RBIs and 41 runs in 65 games with Dunedin before his promotion…After posting an 0-4 mark with 6.81 ERA in his prior seven starts, Deck McGuire picked up wins in his last two outings. In those games he tossed a combined 11 innings against Portland and Reading, striking out six and allowing five earned runs, seven hits and six walks. The 11th overall pick in the 2010 draft has experienced some struggles in his first full season in Double-A (6.22 ERA, 1.52 WHIP), but has shown flashes of what made him such a high draft pick coming out of Georgia Tech.

Conntigerslogo.gifConnecticut Tigers (5-13, NYPL Stedler T-last place - Short-Season A Detroit Tigers) – A four-game losing streak and two three-game slides have not helped the Tigers get off on the right foot this season. The Tigers do have the fourth best team average in the league at .259, but the pitching staff boasts the highest league ERA at 5.06 and second-highest WHIP at 1.48…Outfielder Danry Vasquez, ranked as Detroit’s 11th best prospect per MLB.com, is hitting .406 in 17 games, putting him second in the league in batting average. He has multiple-hits in six of his last nine games and has scored ten runs in his last ten…Edgar De La Rosa has been one of the brighter spots on the pitching staff. In three starts the 6’6” righty is 1-0 with a 1.72 ERA, 1.15 WHIP and 11 strikeouts. His last two starts came against Vermont where allowed only one earned runs and six hits in a combined 12 innings.

lakemonsterslogo.gifVermont Lake Monsters (10-8, NYPL Stedler 2nd place - Short-Season A Oakland A's) – Following an 8-5 June, the Lake Monsters are only 2-3 to start July, leaving them three back of first place Tri-City. They have been shutout in two of their July losses, having accumulated only nine hits combined in those two affairs…Oakland’s 37th-rounder John Wooten has a team-high .338 batting average, good enough for twelfth in the NYPL. His father Sonny played in the Kansas City Royals system in the late-70s…Pitcher Chris Lamb, an 11th round selection in 2011 by Oakland, had been solid through four starts for Vermont and was just called up to Class-A Burlington for his efforts. He compiled a 2-0 record with a 1.50 ERA (8th in NYPL), 1.06 WHIP (9th in NYPL) and struck out 12 batters while only allowing three walks.

Worcester logo.jpgWorcester Tornadoes (14-30, CanAm League last place) – The Tornadoes have hit a rough patch during the start of the dog-days of the season, having lost their last seven games. They have only won two series all season long, taking two of three games from the Newark Bears on two separate occasions…In 20 games as the Tornadoes DH Jose Canseco batted .191 with one home run, seven RBIs, five runs and three stolen bases. It seems as if his time in Worcester is done as he has not played since June 16th… Saugus (Mass.) native and UMass alum Nick Serino is 2-2 with 3 saves and a 3.71 ERA in 15 appearances. Fellow ex-Minuteman hurler Michael Gedman is 1-0 with a 6.75 ERA in 13 appearances. Gedman has also had his chance at the plate, going 1 for 3 with a double…Medford (Mass.) native Johnny Welsh has belted out a team-high ten home runs.
