Welch.jpgFor the second straight week the Carolina League has pegged a Salem Red Sox player for weekly honors, with Stefan Welch being named the Batter of the Week for the period of July 8-14.

The Australian born corner infielder had five multi-hit games in the seven games played during the week, boasting a .542 batting average in helping the Sox to a 6-1 record.

Welch had 13 hits in the period with a double and a home run, he walked three times, drove in seven and scored twice.

The Red Sox obtained Welch from the Pittsburgh Pirates back on June 6th and since arriving in Salem he has a .333 batting average and .872 OPS to go along with nine doubles, two home runs, 19 RBIs and 12 runs scored in 32 games.

More impressive is that he has yet to commit an error this season and that includes 27 games in the field for the Altoona Curve prior to becoming a member of the Red Sox organization.

With Salem he has played nine games at third base and 17 games at first base, a position where he has logged 424 career games with a .996 fielding percentage.

The 24-year-old Welch started his career with the Mets back in 2007, having gotten as high as Double-A ball with Altoona, this season and last.

He joins Mike Augliera, last period’s Carolina League Pitcher of the Week and two-time Batter of the Week Garin Cecchini, as Salem Red Sox weekly honors recipients in 2013.
