The hot stove was lit last week, and now the fire is warming up even more. Here's a brief collection of odds and ends from around the web, all related to off-season baseball news.

  • Jeter deal near? ESPNNewYork.com reports that Yankees captain Derek Jeter will receive a three-year offer from the team worth between $45 million and $60 million. Sources with "intimate" knowledge of the talks tell the website that the Yankees will "overpay" for the 36-year-old shortstop.

  • On the Red Sox pitching front, WEEI.com's Rob Bradford reports that, according to a baseball source, the Red Sox contacted 32-year-old reliever Justin Duchscherer to express interest. Duchscherer went 2-1 with a 2.89 ERA in five starts for the Oakland Athletics last season before undergoing season-ending hip surgery in June. The Herald reports that lefthander Brian Fuentes and righthander Kerry Wood could both be on the Red Sox' radar.

  • Will old friend Manny Ramirez be visiting Fenway eight times a year as a member of the Toronto Blue Jays? It appears unlikely, but numerous reports had the former Red Sox slugger in Toronto on Sunday. Ramirez, who underwent hernia surgery two weeks ago, recently told ESPNdesportes.com's Enrique Rojas that he'd like to join manager John Farrell in Toronto.

  • Speaking of old friends, Cincinnati Reds GM Walt Jocketty said the team has not reached an agreement with former Red Sox righthander Bronson Arroyo on a contract extension. “We haven’t talked since we picked up his option,” Jocketty said. “We’ll continue to talk. Nothing’s set yet. But I’m optimistic.”

  • The Beard of Truth pleads with Red Sox GM Theo Epstein to catch some San Francisco Giants lightning in a bottle by adding facial-haired free agent Jason Werth and even World Series star Brian 'Fear the Beard!' Wilson to the Boston roster.

  • Sports radio WFAN in New York reported this morning that a big name former player will soon be named in the New York Mets clubhouse gambling scandal.

  • The Florida Marlins will change their name to the Miami Marlins prior to opening the 2012 season in their new retractable-roof stadium.
