Go figure: Pat Riley would consider Doc Rivers if he has an opening
A report yesterday from the Miami Herald has Doc Rivers at the top of the list of candidates if Miami Heat team president Pat Riley decides to make a coaching change next summer. The story says Rivers is Riley's "top choice" if he replaces Erik Spoelstra after the season, but also says Riley wants to give Spoelstra every chance to succeed.
Of course, it's not a stretch to speculate that Rivers' name would be thrown out there. He's regarded as one of the top coaches in the league, has a proven track record of handling big-name stars, and would be a free agent when his contract expires next summer.
The Herald's story does cite two NBA sources who said they "would not be surprised" if Rivers took the Heat job, but it wouldn't be hard to get pretty much anyone in the NBA to say that.
So it's out there. Discuss.
