Mark Wahlberg makes cover of Sports Illustrated

People magazine is reporting this morning that Boston native Mark Wahlberg, who plays Lowell boxer Mickey Ward in the movie "The Fighter," has landed on the cover of Sports Illustrated this week. SI has named The Fighter "the best sports movie of the decade." Wahlberg received a Golden Globe Best Actor nomination for his role in the film today.

Sports Illustrated features the 39-year-old Wahlberg shirtless in his boxing shorts and gloves. This also marks one of the rare times in the 56-year history of SI that a non-athlete has appeared on the cover of the magazine aside from the annual swimsuit issue..

Christian Bale, who plays Ward's older half-brother and trainer Dickie Eklund, poses with Walhberg on the cover.

"As somebody who always dreamed of being a professional athlete," Wahlberg says in the People story, "to be on the cover of Sports Illustrated is an amazing accomplishment." In fact, it's a knockout."

Check out the many Boston athletes that have appeared on the cover of SI since 2007.
