Former Red Sox player Bill Buckner has taken a job as a hitting coach for a Chicago Cubs minor-league team, ESPN is reporting.

Buckner, who had been mentioned as a possible candidate for a coaching position in the Red Sox organization under new manager Bobby Valentine, will be the hitting coach for the Boise Hawks, a Class A team in Idaho, where Buckner lives.

According to ESPNBoston.com's Gordon Edes, the Red Sox front office was resistant to the idea of Buckner joining the Red Sox staff.

Buckner managed the Brockton Rox of the independent Can-Am league least summer.
