Boston has been chosen to host the 2014 Prudential US Figure Skating Championship, which will be the final qualifying event before the US Olympic team is chosen for the 2014 Winter Olympics.

The event will take place Jan. 5-12 at TD Garden. The 2014 Winter Olympics will be held in Sochi, Russia, from Feb. 7 to 23, 2014.

“U.S. Figure Skating looks forward to returning to Boston for the 2014 Prudential U.S. Figure Skating Championships,” US Figure Skating executive director David Raith said. “The area is steeped in figure skating tradition. I’m confident that the community’s impressive skating history will extend to the 2014 U.S. Championships.”

Past US champions include Massachusetts natives Nancy Kerrigan (Woburn) and Todd Eldredge (Chatham). The US championships were also held in Boston in 2001, 1962, 1941, 1931, 1926 and 1922.

The Skating Club of Boston will assist US Figure Skating in organizing and holding the event.
