I'll Have Another was expected to take a shot at history Saturday at the Belmont Stakes, potentially capturing the Triple Crown. According to the horse's trainer Doug O'Neill, however, I'll Have Another will not compete.

In an interview on the Dan Patrick Show on Friday, O'Neill said, "We ain't taking any chances," and that the scratch "is a bummer, but far from tragic."

I'll Have Another won the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes in May to set up his bid for the Triple Crown, which no horse has won since 1978.

I’ll Have Another did not have a recorded workout since winning the Preakness May 19. Observers of his morning gallops at Belmont Park nearly unanimously spoke of the horse’s lack of zeal for the work as opposed to how he acted before the Kentucky Derby and Preaches.

A sign that something was amiss came early Friday morning when it was announced that O’Neill had left Belmont Park and wouldn’t be available for interviews. O’Neill did talk to David Grening of The Daily Racing Form and told him the horse was scratched because of developing tendonitis in his left foreleg.

The horse will do nothing for the next three months and most likely will not race again in 2012.
