When a foul ball enters the stands in a baseball park, fans scramble to try to snag a souvenir they can take with them for the rest of their lives.
Some jump, some grab, some reach with their gloves and hands and hats and whatever they can to snare the ball.
Some scream with joy, some stay focused on the moment, some yell at others to get out of their way.
And some turn away in horror, shriek in panic, or lean backward doing everything they can to avoid the spherical piece of leather, yarn, and cork hurdling toward them.
During an Aug. 28 Red Sox-Orioles game at Fenway Park, the Globe’s Jim Davis captured this shot as a foul ball headed into the stands in the first inning. As you can see, almost every person in the scene is wearing a different expression.
In the past week, this photo has been making its rounds on the Internet, gaining wide recognition, even prompting Mashable.com to ask “Is this the funniest photo in baseball history?”
Take a look and judge for yourself.
