After the touchdown, an extremely excited Zolak yelled, “He did it! Brady’s back! That’s your quarterback! Who left the building?” and even dropped references to unicorns, show ponies, and a former Wendy’s commercial slogan, “Where’s the beef?”
The lines were not scripted or written, Zolak joked on Monday, saying some of his phrases were jokes with another host at 98.5. He said at that point in the game, the jubilation and dips and highs of the game came out in the call.
“I’ve never been one to keep emotions out of it,” Zolak said.
In a game where the Patriots were fortunate to get another chance at victory after the Saints failed to run the clock out on two separate drives, Zolak felt the randomness of the call was fitting.
“Maybe that’s why it worked,” he said.
As for his praise for Brady, Zolak acknowledged fans may take for granted Brady’s greatness at the helm and his ability to do the unthinkable, saying “12’s not gonna be around for much longer.”
It looked as though fans may have underestimated Brady and the Patriots’ ability to pull out some magic. Fans started heading for exits after Brady was intercepted by Keenan Lewis with 2:16 to play and the Saints on top, 27-23. So many fans likely caught the final touchdown on the radio, and the voice they heard was Zolak’s.
Zolak's call has been widely distributed via social media, and Deadspin posted one of the most humorous uses – the call set to the same play in the old video game Tecmo Super Bowl.
