Donald Sterling will surrender control of the sale of the Los Angeles Clippers to his wife, Shelly, according to media reports.

According to ESPN, Shelly Sterling has agreed to sell the Clippers. She had recently been giving interviews stating that she hoped her husband would allow her to take primary ownership of the team and keep it despite brush backs from the NBA.

The league banned Donald Sterling for life on April 29 following racist statements the Clippers owner made that were released in audio form to the public.

ESPN sources say the league has yet to agree to the arrangement, and that the NBA would want a new controlling owner for the Clippers. It is unclear what level of ownership, if any, the league would accept Shelly Sterling to retain.

TMZ reported the most recent news about the sale and said sources told them Donald Sterling agreed to step away so that the NBA would not force an involuntary sale of the team.

The league is scheduled to vote on whether to remove the Sterlings from ownership on June 3, unless an amicable agreement can be reached before then, according to NBC.
