Little action expected today, tomorrow

GM Peter Chiarelli has concluded a conference call regarding tomorrow’s opening of free agency. And as expected, given the club’s cap situation, Chiarelli said not to expect much movement today or tomorrow.

“We’re going to sit back,” Chiarelli said. “Unless there are certain players we like and we feel there are good fits for those players.”

Chiarelli said the Bruins will not sign any of their free agents, restricted or unrestricted, before tomorrow’s noon opening. P.J. Axelsson, Mark Recchi, Stephane Yelle, Manny Fernandez, Shane Hnidy, and Steve Montador will become UFAs. Phil Kessel, Matt Hunwick, and Byron Bitz will become RFAs.

* Chiarelli has said previously that he will match any offer sheets. But he tempered that statement today, hinting that he would not match any offer sheets he terms beyond reason. “My guess is that there will be overtures at some point,” Chiarelli said. “I have to deal with them as they unfold. If, at the end of the day, we feel they’re not prudent, we’re not going to do it. We have a salary structure in place. We’re not going to stray from it.”

* Peter Schaefer has cleared waivers. The Bruins have until 5 p.m. today to decide whether to buy out Schaefer. Chiarelli said he has not made a decision on a buyout, which would cost the Bruins $566,667 of cap money in each of the next two seasons.
