McIver, Schaefer signed by Bruins

The Bruins have signed defenseman Nathan McIver and Nolan Schaefer. It is a two-year contract for McIver and a one-year deal for Schaefer.

McIver appeared in 44 games last season for Manitoba, Vancouver’s AHL affiliate, scoring one goal and four assists. McIver also recorded 109 penalty minutes. The 6-foot-2, 195-pound McIver has appeared in 36 NHL games for Vancouver and Anaheim. The 25-year-old was originally picked by Vancouver in the eighth round of the 2003 draft. McIver becomes the second native of Prince Edward Island to join the organization. Adam McQuaid is also from PEI. McIver could be in the mix as the No. 7 defenseman in Boston or a veteran D-man in Providence.

Schaefer, who starred at Providence College for four seasons, spent 2009-10 with CSKA Moscow of the KHL. Schaefer went 6-10-1 with a 2.66 GAA and an .895 save percentage. Schaefer’s only NHL experience came in 2006-07, when he appeared in seven games for San Jose (5-1-0, 1.87 GAA, .920 save percentage). The 30-year-old Schaefer is the younger brother of former Bruin Peter Schaefer. The 6-foot-2, 195-pound netminder projects to serve as a veteran goalie in Providence.
