MINNEAPOLIS — Good afternoon from the Twin Cities, where the Bruins are putting their final touches on their draft board in preparation for tomorrow’s first round. The draft will take place at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul.
The Bruins have the No. 9 pick tomorrow. It is the final piece of the Phil Kessel trade, which has already netted Tyler Seguin and Jared Knight.
“I don’t think there’ll be any magic for us tomorrow,” said GM Peter Chiarelli. “After 3-4, I’d say there’s another real good group of another eight.”
If they stay put, one player in their crosshairs would be defenseman Ryan Murphy. The puck-moving defenseman has been compared to former Windsor Spitfires standout Ryan Ellis, selected 11th overall in 2009. The Bruins inquired about Ellis when Nashville showed interest in acquiring Kessel.
Including No. 9, the Bruins will have five picks in the draft. The others are No. 40 (via Minnesota in the Chuck Kobasew trade), No. 81 (via Phoenix in the Derek Morris trade), No. 121, No. 151, and No. 181.
* Chiarelli confirmed that Tuukka Rask will undergo knee surgery on his meniscus. It is considered a minor procedure.
* The Bruins are close to signing a head coach for Providence. An announcement could come by Saturday.
