FINAL, Mavericks 99-90: It was a tale of two halves as the Celtics led 50-41 at halftime and got smoked after the break. The Celtics never quit, but Dallas opened it up early in the fourth quarter to put the game out of reach.
Dirk Nowitzki led Dallas with 37 points, while Jason Kidd had 13 points and 17 assists. Paul Pierce had 24 points in a losing effort for the Celtics.
2:45 4th quarter, Mavericks 95-84: The Celtics are at least showing a little fight, but they might run out of time.
8:01 4th quarter, Mavericks 89-75: Jason Terry’s three-pointer sends fans streaming for the exits.
9:06 4th quarter, Mavericks 83-75: Glen Davis is clearly not working on Dirk Nowitzki (34 points).
END 3d quarter, Mavericks 75-68: Dirk Nowitzki has caught fire, scoring 13 of his 28 points in the third quarter as the Mavericks have taken the lead. Dallas is up to 58-percent shooting, a troubling number for Doc Rivers.
The Mavericks outscored the Celtics 34-17 in the quarter.
5:43 3d quarter, Celtics 63-58: In case you’re wondering, Kendrick Perkins caught an elbow and required two stitches underneath his right eye. He’s on the court, with a bandage over the stitches.
7:08 3d quarter, Celtics 61-56: Jason Kidd (10 points, 9 assists) is besting Rajon Rondo (7 points, 10 assists) at the point so far. It’s obviously close, but you would think Rondo would have the edge at this point in Kidd’s career.
Halftime, Celtics 50-41: The second unit kept the Celtics in the game in the second quarter, and the starters came in to push the lead before halftime. Ray Allen (13 points) led the charge as the Celtics are shooting 55 percent.
Paul Pierce had a strong first quarter but didn’t play much in the second. He’s still got 11 points. Rasheed Wallace has three personal fouls.
If the Celtics could make free throws (4 of 11) this game would be over.
5:49 2d quarter, Celtics 35-30: Technical foul on Rick Carlisle, cursing out officials after a foul was not called on Glen Davis, who appeared to bump Nowitzki.
7:31 2d quarter, Celtics 31-26: Mavericks have turned it over seven times, which is the only discernible difference in this game thus far.
9:14 2d quarter, Celtics 27-24: Jose Barea running the point now for Dallas. Shot clock violation for Mavs. He needs to be effective for Dallas to win this game.
END 1st quarter, Celtics 25-20: Paul Pierce (11 points) looks explosive as the Celtics have the lead after one. Pierce has been taking it to the basket with aggression, even throwing down a thunderous dunk (though he did miss two free throws).
On the other end, Jason Kidd and Dirk Nowitzki have eight points apiece.
3:10 1st quarter, Celtics 17-14: Kendrick Perkins and Erick Dampier are having a battle down low. Perkins is winning so far (4 points, 6 rebounds), but most of the work won’t show up on the stat sheet. These big boys are really pushing each other around.
5:20 1st quarter, Celtics 13-10: Jason Kidd, Celtics killer, has six points, a couple of three-pointers.
8:41 1st quarter, Celtics 9-2: That’s the best home start in recent memory for the Celtics. Ray Allen caps a nice run with a three-pointer. Quick timeout by Dallas.
Three Celtics to watch tonight: Paul Pierce (braces on both knees), Glen Davis (having his wrist taped on the bench), and Rasheed Wallace (foot).
11:20 1st quarter, Tied at 0: Great passing, but Rasheed Wallace misses a dunk. He’s a little rusty after missing last week’s games.
Pregame: Tonight’s starters: Boston — Perkins, Wallace, Pierce, Allen, Rondo. Dallas: Dampier, Nowitzki, Marion, Kidd, Howard.
