In a deal that had been speculated for months, the New York Knicks finally forged their superstar tandem with hopes of competing with the Celtics and Heat, acquiring Carmelo Anthony in a nine-player deal with the Denver Nuggets that includes Chauncy Billups, former Celtic Shelden Williams, Anthony Carter and Renaldo Balkman going to the Knicks and Danilo Gallinari, Wilson Chandler, Timofey Mozgov and Raymond Felton headed to the Nuggets.

Denver also receives draft picks and cash as compensation for dealing one of its all-time great players. The Nuggets didn’t have much of a choice after Anthony indicated he wouldn’t sign a three-year extension with the team and would test free agency this summer. He said often he would love to return to his New York roots and play for the Knicks, but the Nets were the most aggressive team in pursuing him until the last few days when the Knicks increased their offer to include the promising Gallinari, a fan favorite at Madison Square Garden and Mozgov, a 7-footer with potential.
