The Celtics came home last night from Atlanta an angry and shorthanded team after losing to the Hawks and losing Nenad Krstic to a knee injury Thursday in San Antonio. But the bad health team got good news when an MRI on Krstic’s right knee showed only a bone bruise and he is listed as day-to-day.

Krstic is not likely to play Sunday against the Detroit Pistons and perhaps could miss a few games, but the Celtics feared it may have been an anterior cruciate ligament tear, which could have cost him the season. Krstic was running down the court during the second quarter of Boston’s 107-97 win over San Antonio and the knee was bent awkwardly during a collision.

“We’re happy with the prognosis,” Krstic’s agent, Mark Cornstein said today. “We’re excited it’s not a severe injury. It sounds like a pretty deep bone bruise.”

The Celtics received added big-man depth with the return of Jermaine O’Neal while Shaquille O’Neal may also return this week.
