In the spirit of good clean college football fun, some enterprising UMass fan went ahead and updated the wardrobe on the Doug Flutie statue down at Boston College’s Alumni Stadium in anticipation of this Saturday’s game between UMass and BC in Foxborough.
Flutie is of course the legendary BC quarterback who threw the famous Hail Mary pass to receiver Gerard Phelan to give the Eagles a thrilling 47-45 last-second win over the University of Miami on Nov. 23, 1984.
Flutie ended up winning the 1984 Heisman Trophy and many people believe that it was “The Pass” that ultimately won the voters over. It’s not true, however—the voting was complete before the Miami game.
On Nov. 7, 2008, Boston College unveiled a life-sized statue commemorating the Hail Mary pass. Flutie said he was “a little bit in awe” after being honored.
The “Battle For the Bay State” between the two schools takes place this Saturday at Gillette Stadium as the UMass Minutemen host the Boston College Eagles at 3:00 p.m.. Parking is free and the tailgate lots open at noon.
