Crespi, Mayer in leadership roles

Amy Crespi was attracted to Connecticut College in New London four years ago because of the institution's highly respected academic program and the opportunity to play volleyball at the next level.

Now in her final season suiting up for the Camels, the Weymouth High product knows that she made the right choice.

"I would not change anything," said Crespi, a 5-foot-9 right-side hitter. "I've really enjoyed my four years here."

She does not consider herself a vocal leader, but for the second straight season, she has been voted a team captain by her teammates.

"I lead more by example and just try to help my teammates out," Crespi said. "I'm more of a quiet leader."

Crespi has 368 kills, 505 digs, and 125 blocks in her career. The last two seasons, the team has compiled a 36-19 record and entered last week with a 12-5 mark (4-1 in the New England Small College Athletic Conference).

"Amy is doing a great job of embracing the role of a captain," coach Josh Edmed said. "She has great leadership qualities and has been very influential in the success our team has experienced early on this year."

North Quincy grad Maria McGinness is a senior middle blocker on the squad.

Courtney Mayer of Hingham is also a senior captain this season, for the Connecticut College field hockey team.

A Noble & Greenough graduate, Mayer plays back for the Camels, who were 4-5 through their first nine games.

Coach Debbie Lavigne said that Mayer has settled into her role as captain well.

"Courtney is our most vocal player on the field and our toughest defender," Lavigne said. "She is able to motivate her teammates through her gritty play and hard work."

Goal wins Geary field hockey honor
University of New Hampshire back Sam Geary of Norwood was selected the America East Player of the Week for field hockey last week after she scored the game-winning goal in a 2-1 double-overtime victory against Maine.

Geary has collected five points this season on two goals and one assist (7-6 overall).

Area players boost UMass soccer team
The UMass-Dartmouth men's soccer team ended last week ranked ninth in New England by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America Poll with a 10-2-1 record. The team features several players from the area, among them Byron Andrade of Brockton, Ronnie Beaudoin of Weymouth, Mike Daley of Mansfield, Frank Giampa of Norwell, Jared Goldstein of Weymouth, Steve Littke of Scituate, and Manny Monteiro of Brockton.

Andrade is among the leaders for the Corsairs with two goals and four assists in 13 games.

7 tourney teams from Sacred Heart
The postseason will be a busy time for Sacred Heart of Kingston. All seven of the school's fall sports teams have qualified for the tournament. Among the highlights for the school are the boys' golf and girls' soccer teams, which have each clinched Mayflower League titles.

Through 11 games, the girls' soccer team was 11-0-0 overall, including a perfect 9-0-0 in the Mayflower Division 1.

The boys' golf team was 8-0 last week, and leading the Mayflower South Division.

Looney's tackles power Curry
Oliver Ames grad Michael Looney contributed more than two tackles in Curry College's sixth straight win last week. The junior defensive back from North Easton scooped up a fumble and returned the ball 81 yards for a score in the Colonels' 52-20 win over MIT. Looney ranked fifth on the team with 23 total tackles through six games.

Plymouth North graduate Thomas Pinto leads the team with 37 total tackles.
