Four recent Westwood High graduates delivered fine performances for their respective college track and field programs in the past week.

Jeff Moriarty, a freshman at Columbia, qualified for the NCAA Division I East Regional meet in the 800 meters with a time of 1 minute, 49.71 seconds at the 29th annual Sun Angel Track Classic at Arizona State. His time was the first under 1:50 by a Columbia first-year. Moriarty will join the team's 800-meter relay team at the Penn Relays, which begin April 24.

Tom O'Connor, a freshman at Bryant, finished third in the 100 (11.17) and 400 (49.72) meters at the George Davis Invitational held at the University of Massachusetts at Lowell. His times were personal bests in each event.

David Kusmin, a freshman at Bentley, placed fifth at the invitational in the long jump with a personal-best leap of 20 feet, 10 inches. He already has earned Northeast-10 freshman field athlete of the week honors this spring.

And Adrian Macdonald, a sophomore at Gettysburg, was fourth in the 1,500 meters at the Messiah College Invitational with a time of 4:07.23.

Area players contribute to BC's hockey title
Several area players contributed to the NCAA Division 1 champion Boston College men's hockey team this season.

Kudos to junior defenseman Anthony Aiello of Braintree (Thayer Academy), senior forward Matt Greene of Plymouth (BC High), freshman forward Brian Gibbons of Braintree (Salisbury School), and sophomore forward Matt Lombardi of Milton (Governor's Academy), who all chipped in throughout the Eagles' 25-11-8 season. Star freshman goalie John Muse of East Falmouth prepped at Noble & Greenough in Dedham while junior forward Andrew Orpik is a Thayer Academy product.

In Saturday's clinching 4-1 win over Notre Dame in Denver - the program's third NCAA title and first since 2001 - Gibbons assisted on goals by Nathan Gerbe in the second period and Ben Smith in the third. Gibbons registered 13 goals and 18 assists this season while Aiello collected three goals and 10 assists.
