HENLEY-ON-THAMES, England - Three Temple Challenge Cup quarterfinals in the student eights were all-American affairs yesterday at the Henley Royal Regatta.

In a quarterfinal between Massachusetts schools, Williams College kept pace with Harvard University for the first quarter-mile before the Crimson took a three-quarter-length victory.

Harvard will take on Canada's University of Western Ontario. The Canadians beat Durham, the British university champion.

In the first race, Trinity College of Connecticut took an early lead over Grand Valley State University of Michigan and held on to win by two-thirds of a length.

Trinity advanced to a semifinal today against Stanford University, which defeated Cornell University by 1 length.

In the quarterfinals of the Double Sculls Challenge Cup, Gabriel Winkler and Daniel Simkin of the California Rowing Club from Oakland won by 3 3/4 lengths over London Rowing Club's Herbert Griffin and Diarmaid MacColgan.

Winkler and Simkin will face Peter and Thomas Graves from Cincinnati's Bantam Boat Club. They easily beat Wolter Blankert and Alwin Snidjers of Dutch clubs Skoll and Proteus-Eretes.

Wesley Piermarini and Elliot Hover of California Rowing Club - who will represent the United States at the Beijing Olympics - became the third American semifinal crew in the double sculls, beating Australians Derek Lowe and Tim Hennessy in their quarterfinal by 2 lengths.

In the quarterfinals of the Prince of Wales Challenge Cup for intermediate quadruple sculls crews, the Riverside Boat Club from Massachusetts drew steadily away from England's Reading University to win by 1 1/2 lengths.

Boston University's women's eight eventually went down by a half-length to Osiris Boat Club, from Oxford University, England, in a quarterfinal of the Remenham Challenge Cup.
