■Merrimack may have the final laugh on all those preseason prognosticators who predicted gloom and doom for its hockey team. The Warriors were 4-2 overall heading into this weekend’s home-and-home series against Boston College. After beating Vermont (5-2) and Connecticut (4-1) last weekend, Merrimack was 4-0 at home, and that hasn’t happened since it joined Hockey East in 1988. Merrimack is hoping to make it 5-0 at Lawler Arena this afternoon against visiting BC. Face-off is 4 p.m. Junior John Jamieson of Billerica scored his first collegiate goal and sophomore goalie Joe Cannata of Wakefield had 25 saves in the win over Vermont.

■Bentley senior linebacker Matt Zahoruiko turned in another stellar defensive performance in a 24-20 win over Assumption. Zahoruiko was credited with 10 tackles, eight in the second half, recovered a fumble to set up the go-ahead touchdown, and had an interception in the closing minutes to thwart Assumption’s final drive. That earned him NE-10 defensive Player of the Week honors for the second time this season. Bentley, which has a bye this week, is 8-1 overall and sits atop the Northeast-10 Conference standings at 6-1.

■St. Anselm freshman quarterback Michael Pierce of Andover was last weekend’s NE-10 Conference Offensive Player of the Week after completing 36 of 74 passes for 390 yards and three touchdowns in a 31-28 loss to Stonehill. Pierce also rushed for 106 yards for a school record 496 total yards. He received the Gridiron Club of Greater Boston’s Division 2-3 Gold Helmet Award from the New England Football Writers on Wednesday.

■Merrimack’s women’s basketball team is holding a food drive to benefit Lazarus House during today’s 2 p.m. exhibition game against St. Mary’s (Nova Scotia) University. Fans are asked to bring nonperishable food items.

■Bridgewater State senior Ashley Hersey of Newburyport had two goals and three assists in 3-0 soccer wins over Framingham State and Plymouth State and was named MASCAC Player of the Week.

■Senior Jessica Penta of Revere did not allow a goal in 135 minutes of play, leading the University of Massachusetts at Boston soccer team to wins over Massachusetts Maritime and Plymouth State. She was named Little East Conference Goalkeeper of the Week. Penta has a 1.14 goals-against average in nine matches covering 630 minutes.

■Junior Evan O’Brien of Winthrop is one of four players named captains of the University of Vermont lacrosse team. O’Brien played hockey and golf at Winthrop before starring in lacrosse, hockey, soccer, and golf at Rivers School and Phillips Exeter.

■Senior Alex Martland of Marblehead and junior Trevor Prophet of Nashua are playing key roles for the Connecticut College soccer team, which has clinched its first winning season since 2000. Martland plays goal and has five shutouts and sports a 1.06 goals-against average; Prophet is the team’s leading scorer with eight goals and 18 points. Connecticut, 8-3-1 after a dozen games, is ranked No. 7 in New England.
