Connecticut College goalie Steph Quinn of Arlington finished her senior season on a high note, backstopping the Camels field hockey team this fall to its first appearance in the New England Small College Athletic Conference postseason tournament since 2005.

A graduate of the Brooks School in North Andover, Quinn ranked third in the NESCAC and 32d in the nation with an average of eight saves per game. In a 2-1 victory against 16th-ranked Amherst College on Sept. 26, Quinn recorded 10 of her 13 saves in the second half, earning her selection to the Womensfieldhockey.com website’s weekly honor roll.

“Steph was a tremendous asset to our program,’’ said head coach Debbie Lavigne. “I was most impressed with her leadership. She played with a ton of confidence and stepped up in several games. Her competitive attitude was contagious.’’

Quinn’s teammates included freshman Kelsey Nickerson (Weston High), who had four goals and four assists and was second on the team with 12 points, and sophomore Hanna Wagner of Sudbury (Lincoln-Sudbury High), who chipped in with four goals and eight points.

Spielman dives right in as a college freshman
Sara Spielman, a freshman at the University of Rochester and a graduate of Belmont High School, has already impressed the university’s diving coach, Greg Brandes, after her first two meets.

Spielman finished second overall on the 1-meter board in a meet against Case Western Reserve and New York University, with her scoring average of 204.5 including a first-place finish against Case Western’s divers, and was third overall on the 3-meter board, with 209 points. Her performance was noted by the University Athletic Association, which named her its women’s swimming and diving athlete of the week. She followed that up with a pair of third-place finishes (against eight competitors) last weekend in a match with Union College.

“Sara’s the only diver I’ve coached in my six years here to score at least 200 points in her first meet,’’ said Brandes. “She’s been consistently good and sometimes great. She trains long and hard, and that’s going to make her an even better diver in college.’’

In both her junior and senior years at Belmont High, Spielman was a third-place finisher at the Division 2 state meet, and she was a three-time Middlesex League diving champ and four-time league all-star. She also competed for the Charles River Diving Club.

Ortiz skating toward a banner season
With nine points in as many games, University of Massachusetts at Amherst senior Will Ortiz of Framingham was on track for the most productive season of his college hockey career. The 5-foot-9, 164-pound forward had 3 goals and 6 assists, including the game-winner against Boston University. His 21 points as a freshman is his single-season high at UMass.

“Will is athletic and energetic and is playing the best hockey of his career. He’s a great ambassador for our program, on and off the ice,’’ said head coach Don (Toot) Cahoon, whose team was 7-2 going into Thursday’s game against Yale, and ranked 11th in two national polls. Ortiz is a member of the university’s student athlete advisory panel, and has participated in the NCAA’s summer leadership conference.
