Boston University’s bid to erase a five-run deficit came up one short as Long Island University hung on for a 5-4 win last night, eliminating the Terriers from the NCAA Division 1 softball regional in Amherst.

After starter Cassidi Hardy allowed four runs in 4 1/3 innings, Whitney Tuthill relieved and allowed only one more. Down, 5-0, BU (35-22) scored three runs in the sixth and another in the seventh before falling short.

Earlier BU ousted host Massachusetts, taking advantage of sloppy play by the Minutewomen to win, 10-4.

NCAA Division 2 tournament — Molloy freshman Megan Butterworth beat New Haven, 2-0 and 1-0, to eliminate the Chargers in the best-of-three East Super Regionals in West Haven, Conn.

NCAA Division 3 World Series — Sophomore Molly Rathburn pitched a one-hit shutout and Ashley Sullivan hit a three-run home run as Eastern Connecticut stayed alive in the double-elimination tournament with a 3-0 win over Moravian in Eau Claire, Wis.

Baseball
NCAA Division 3 tournament — Tim Fontaine homered and drove in three runs and UMass-Boston (32-15) downed Tufts, 12-6, in Mansfield, Conn., to win the regional and earn a trip to the World Series in Appleton, Wis.

Women’s lacrosse
NCAA Division 1 quarterfinals — One day before slain teammate Yeardley Love was supposed to graduate, Virginia lost to North Carolina, 17-7, in Chapel Hill. The Cavaliers were playing their first road game since Love’s death three weeks ago . . . Katrina Dowd scored three goals, giving her an NCAA-record 42 in the tournament, and Northwestern (19-1) rolled past Duke, 18-8, in Evanston, Ill. . . . Maryland (20-1) got five goals apiece from Sarah Mollison and Caitlyn McFadden in earning a 15-5 win over visiting Penn . . . Halley Quillinan scored three goals to lead Syracuse (15-6) to a 7-3 win over host James Madison.

Men’s lacrosse
NCAA Division 1 quarterfinals — In Princeton, N.J., Sean Rogers scored three goals to lead Notre Dame (9-6) to an upset of Maryland, 7-5 . . . Zach Howell scored four goals and Duke (14-4) dominated North Carolina, 17-9.
