Brandeis University senior outfielder Jon Winston, who will graduate with a 3.76 grade-point average with a double major in biochemistry and biology, was cited in ESPN The Magazine as a first-team Academic All-District 1 College Division selection. A tricaptain for the Judges, Winston started all 29 games and led the team with 26 RBIs and tied for the team lead with two home runs while batting .307. With his all-district honor, he is now eligible for Academic All-America honors . . . Lindsey Toomey of Wellesley wrapped up a stellar career on the mound at Colby College this spring, finishing with the second-best earned-run average (1.72) in the New England Small College Athletic Conference. In her final game, she tossed a four-hitter in the Mules' 6-0 win over the University of Maine at Presque Isle, striking out four with no walks. She finished the season with a 4-1 record. Over four years, Toomey compiled a 16-7 mark with a 1.64 ERA . . . Brandeis junior first baseman Kaitlin Streilein was honored as an All-New England second-team at-large selection in softball after batting a team-leading .432 with 11 home runs and 32 RBIs.
Bentley College senior golfer Matt Freedman of Sudbury fired an even-par 71, the best round of his collegiate career, to earn runner-up honors at last week's NCAA Division 2 Northeast Regional in Wheeling, W.Va. The Lincoln-Sudbury Regional High graduate, who shot 77 and 79 in the first two rounds of the NCAA tournament, had a 54-hole total of 227, finishing two strokes behind Dan McCarthy of Le Moyne College . . . Colin Flynn of Needham, a senior at Ithaca College, recorded his 42d career tennis doubles win last week, moving into a fifth-place tie on the program's all-time list for doubles. With 92 overall wins, Flynn was seventh all-time at Ithaca . . . Jackie Thomas of Needham, a senior midfielder on the Tufts University women's lacrosse team, earned a spot on the All-NESCAC second team. Thomas led the Jumbos (7-7) on the defensive end, scooping up 45 ground balls and forcing 36 turnovers. Her speed was a key element in the team's transition game. She started all 58 games in her collegiate career.

Tonight at 7, the Israeli national men's and women's flag football teams will put on a clinic and exhibition at the Leventhal-Sidman Jewish Community Center, 333 Nahanton St. in Newton. The national teams represent the best players in the American Football in Israel league, which boasts 70 teams and more than 900 players. Flag football is popular in Europe and the Middle East and is growing in popularity in the United States. In Israel, there are 9-on-9 and 6-on-6 full-contact men's leagues and 5-on-5 non contact women's leagues. A barbecue will be held at 6 p.m., with a demonstration and clinic on passing, catching, and running to follow. Children are encouraged to participate in the clinic . . . William Burke, headmaster of St. Sebastian's School in Needham, will host a retirement gala for former Wayland, Newton, and Newton North football coach Norm Walker on June 28. Walker coached in Newton from 1968 to 1983 before closing out his career with a 23-year run at the Holderness School in New Hampshire. The Hopkinton High girls' track and field team captured its fourth straight Tri-Valley League crown last week with a win over Holliston.
