University of Massachusetts at Lowell baseball coach Ken Harring earned his 200th career win last week when the River Hawks downed Dominican College, 14-3. In his fourth season at Lowell, Harring also coached four seasons at Northeast-10 Conference rival Saint Anselm College, and has compiled an overall record of 200-186. Harring led the River Hawks to NCAA tournament bids in his first three seasons at UMass-Lowell, and last spring the squad went 33-20, the ninth time in program history it won more than 30 games. In 2006, Harring guided the River Hawks to a 37-14 record as the squad captured its fifth Northeast-10 Conference championship in six years. The team's record this spring was 25-23, and 18-12 in the NE-10, heading into yesterday's opening round of the conference tournament, with UMass seeded fourth.
Senior Derek Klinka took a no-hitter into the seventh inning during Westford Academy's 11-2 Dual County League victory over Boston Latin. The right-hander is on his way to pitch for Holy Cross next season. Against Boston Latin, he finished with 12 strikeouts and improved to 4-0. He also cracked a double at the plate. With Westford's 10th win of the season, the Grey Ghosts qualified for the state tournament.
Former Lowell High standout Laurie Tanguay added to her legacy in the record books at the University of Massachusetts at Lowell. The senior outfielder already holds the softball program's all-time home run record, with 19 career dingers, but last week she recorded her 125th and 126th RBIs to become the River Hawks' all-time leader in runs batted in.
Acton-Boxborough Regional High girls' lacrosse goalie Cat Conway is making the best of her senior year. The two-year varsity player had anchored the Colonials' defense with a 6.8 goals-against average, and as of last weekend the team had lost only once this year, to Dual County League rival Lincoln-Sudbury Regional. She's on track to play for Division 1 Boston College next season.
Westford resident Mike Pettiglio is on his way to play football at Worcester Polytechnic Institute in the fall. Suiting up for Bishop Guertin High in Nashua the past four seasons, Pettiglio punted, kicked off, and played linebacker and fullback. As a senior last fall, he was selected to New Hampshire's All-State first team. This spring, he is on the school's outdoor track and field team, throwing the discus and the javelin. He plans to study biotechnology engineering at WPI.![]()
