Matt Duffy will don a baseball uniform for the University of Tennessee next year, but the Milton native put together a stellar final season at the University of Vermont.

The sophomore shortstop was an honorable mention pick on the 2009 All Ping! Baseball National All-American Team, and was a second-team selection on the ABCA Northeast Region squad and the ECAC Division I All-Star team.

The Catholic Memorial graduate was the only player from the America East to receive All-America honors from any organization and was one of three from the conference to be recognized by ABCA and ECAC.

In the final season of UVM baseball because of budget cuts, Duffy was named the America East Player of the Year after he hit .388, tied the program’s single-season record with 13 home runs, set program records in runs (57) and RBIs (57) while slugging at a .713 rate.

Duffy was the first UVM player to lead the America East in batting average since 2002 and led the conference in RBIs, runs scored, slugging percentage and on base percentage (.495).

“Playing at Tennessee is “a good situation, but it’s obviously not my first choice to have to leave Vermont,’’ Duffy told the Globe earlier this month. “It’s a terrible situation with what’s happened here. At the same time, you have to take the good with the bad and look at it in a positive light.’’

Vermont ended its season 23-33 and 14-10 in America East, ending up tied for third in the conference.

UMass women’s rowers honored
Erin Kelly of Stoughton and Weymouth native Karen Plevock were among eight women rowers at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst to be named 2009 College Rowing Coaches Association National Scholar Athletes.

To be selected, athletes had to maintain at least a 3.5 grade point average, be in at least their second year of eligibility, and compete in at least 75 percent of the spring races or regional conference events.

Kelly ended her senior year with a host of honors, including the Atlantic 10 All-Conference first team, 2009 Atlantic 10 Sporting Award, and 2009 UMass Female Scholar Athlete of the Year.

Plevock was honored for the second year and, along with Kelly, is a Fontbonne Academy graduate.
