Jack Colton and Mike Dodakian have played on the same baseball teams since they were 11 years old. Whether it was AAU ball, summer league, or now as teammates at the Roxbury Latin School, they have never been on opposite sides.

That’s likely to change next year.

A shortstop from Milton, Colton has received a “likely’’ letter of acceptance from Harvard, while Dodakian, a righthanded pitcher and third baseman from Walpole, has received his letter from Ivy League rival Dartmouth. The letters are sent out in advance of official admission to maintain a competitive recruiting advantage.

Harvard “was always my top school,’’ said Colton, who also received strong interest from Clemson University and St. John’s University in New York. “It was an easy choice. I might sit on the bench and get stuck on the depth chart at a bigger Division 1 program. I love the coaching staff at Harvard and will get to play baseball at the best school in the world.’’

Colton played outfield as a freshman at Roxbury Latin before shifting to shortstop, where he’s been a three-year starter with a terrific arm and range, and has hit .318 over the past two seasons. The 5-foot-11-inch, 185-pound senior is also the starting quarterback and captain of the football team.

“My football career is coming to an end in a few weeks,’’ he said, but baseball is another story. “I’ll play wherever there’s an opening at Harvard. Whether it’s outfield’’ or an infield spot, he said, “I want to be able to fill a need.’’

Dodakian went 5-1 with two saves, 77 strike outs, and a 1.38 ERA in 56 innings over the past two seasons for Roxbury Latin. And last spring he hit .405 (17-42) with three doubles, two homers, and 12 RBIs.

“Mike’s a great player, and the matchup would be a lot of fun,’’ Colton said. “I’m not looking forward to facing him; he’s pretty good.’’

“The last couple years we’ve been fortunate to have some talented student-athletes who have come through the classroom and worked hard,’’ said Roxbury Latin coach John Lieb. “Jack and Mike really want to play at the next level and have worked hard at that.’’

Forand’s a net win for Nichols squad
Judging by the program record 17 wins, it’s hard to imagine that Krista-Jean Forand is playing goalie for the first time for the Nichols College field hockey team.

The sophomore from Plymouth via Hebron Academy already plays ice hockey and lacrosse for the Division 3 program in Dudley; this fall, she tried out for the field hockey squad. And after Kate Bednarz, the projected starter in net, went down with a left foot injury and the backup goalie quit the team, Forand volunteered to play goal.

“She came to me and wanted to try the pads on,’’ head coach Kristan Mallet said of Forand, who was named the Commonwealth Coast Conference’s current Rookie of the Week. “I didn’t hesitate because we were in a situation where we needed a goalie. And here we are.’’

The Bison advanced to yesterday’s conference championship after a 3-1 win over University of New England, which owns the nation’s sixth-best scoring offense. After 19 games, Forand was second in the conference in shutouts, with six, and first in goals-against average (0.98).

“She has no experience as a goalie in any sport,’’ said Mallet. “But she’s vocal, sees the field well, communicates well, and is a hard-working kid. That’s where her success comes from.’’

Murphy lifts squad to title, NCAA berth

Nicole Murphy of Dedham was named the Most Outstanding Player as Bentley University’s field hockey team won the Northeast-10 Conference title for the second consecutive year and ninth time in 14 years. The senior midfielder was stellar as the Falcons (16-4) knocked off host Stonehill, 2-1, for their 15th win in their last 17 games.

This fall also marks the sixth consecutive year and 10th time in 11 seasons that Bentley qualified for the NCAA Division 2 championships, with the Falcons slated to host the University of Massachusetts at Lowell squad in a first-round game yesterday.

DiMascio receives Doug Flutie Award
Former Braintree High School softball star Liz DiMascio has won the Bay State Conference’s Doug Flutie Award, which recognizes the league’s top graduating male and female student-athletes from the previous year.

DiMascio, now at Brown University after graduating as her class valedictorian with a 4.0 grade-point average, lettered four years in both volleyball and softball at Braintree.

The three-time Bay State League All-Star and two-time MVP led the Division 1 South sectional champs with 16 shutouts, 268 strikeouts, and a 0.27 earned run average last spring.

She also was named a Bay State Conference first-team All-Star as an outside hitter on the Wamps volleyball team, a state finalist for the 2008 Wendy’s High School Heisman, and a candidate for the Gatorade Softball Player of the Year in Massachusetts.
