Boston Globe sports editor Joe Sullivan provides weekly insights on men's college basketball until the champion is crowned at the Final Four in Atlanta.

Tipoff:

  • Northeastern coach Bill Coen has done a great job, beating Hofstra was unthinkable back in November but he's gotten the most out of the Huskies. Drexel is next.

  • I know Washington State lost to Stanford in overtime Saturday night but check out the line on Washington State's Kyle Weaver: 14 points, 13 rebounds, 10 assists, and six steals. Weaver is a 6-foot-5 guard and the Associated Press story said it was believed to be the first triple double in Washington State history.

    Weaver now joins Jared Jordan on the All-Sully team, players I love to watch. One problem with Weaver Saturday night, he had a chance to win the game in regulation and didn't shoot the ball in time.

  • Even Globe North sports writer Julian Benbow can't ignore his alma mater, Virginia Commonwealth. The Rams are unexpected leaders in the Colonial Athletic Association at 6-0 (14-3 overall).

  • Hey, Holy Cross beat Bucknell on Friday night and now is in charge in the Patriot League.

  • Greg Oden of Ohio State is getting all the ink as the next NBA overall No. 1 pick, and he deserves the attention and was great against Tennessee on Saturday, but you can't overlook Texas freshman Kevin Durant. The 6-9 forward averages 23.7 points per game and 11 rebounds.

  • This is Dave Bike's 28th year as coach at Sacred Heart and his team is finally making some progress in Division 1. He has them in first place in the Northeast Conference for the first time. Sacred Heart jumped from Division 2 to 1 in 1999.

  • This week's VMI update: A 115-104 loss to High Point, a 116-83 win over Charleston Southern. The Keydets lead the nation in scoring, steals, and three pointers attempted per game.

  • Illinois-Chicago lost its coach Jimmy Collins to an aortic aneurysm in December, plus three players for assorted reasons but this week they upset Butler and Loyola of Chicago.

    "They deserve to have something good like this happen to them," said interim Flames head coach Mark Coomes.

    Five on the rise:

    Syracuse: Three straight conference wins have Orange feeling good.

    UMass: The Minutemen are legit A-10 contenders after beating two old nemeses, George Washington and Temple.

    Penn: The Ivy League race is already over. The Quakers have no one who can contend with them.

    Florida: Back to No. 1 after winning nine straight. How about beating South Carolina by 34? Still clearly the favorite to win the national championship.

    Virgnia Tech: The Hokies are undefeated in the ACC with victories over Duke and North Carolina.

    Five falling:

    Duke: They won yesterday but the Dookies still started 0-2 in the ACC.

    UConn: Losing big at home to Marquette shows this is a team that's still learning.

    Princeton: How the Ivy giant has fallen, back-to-back losses to Columbia and Cornell.

    Drexel: Our mid-major darling loses two straight to Hofstra and Old Dominion. Two good opponents but it was still unexpected.

    Northwestern State: Last year's NCAA darling lost at home to Texas A&M Corpus Christi, ending a 24-game streak.

    Sully's rant:

    So if Marty Schottenheimer coaches the University of Florida do you think they'd start holding the ball if they got a big lead?

    This week's George Mason: Fullerton State and their great unknown guard, Bobby Brown.
