BC's bowl options

Posted by Mark Blaudschun, Globe Staff November 24, 2008 01:58 PM

Here's a look at Boston College's bowl options heading into Saturday's game against Maryland.

If the Eagles . . .

Beat Maryland and win the Atlantic Coast Conference title the following week: They will play in the Orange Bowl in Miami as the ACC champion against the Big East champion, which right now looks like Cincinnati . Another possible opponent could be Utah, but that would be a long shot.

Beat Maryland and lose the conference title game: ACC rules state that the loser of the title game can drop no lower than fourth in the bowl pecking-order -- unless that team wants to go to another bowl game. This year the top of the ACC bowl order is the BCS (Orange Bowl), the Chick fil-A bowl, the Gator Bowl, the Champs Sports Bowl, and the Music City Bowl. The other rule is that three of those bowls -- the Gator, Champ Sports, and Music City bowls -- must select the ACC runner-up at least once in a four-year cycle. The Gator Bowl and Champs Bowl have met that requirement, while the Music City Bowl has not, which means that BC would be a likely choice for that game, probably against Vanderbilt. The Eagles would be eligible for the Gator or Chick fil-A bowl, but neither seems likely.

Lose to Maryland: The choices look like the Music City Bowl or the Emerald Bowl in San Francisco.

Although there are two weeks remaining, some scenarios are already in place for several ACC bowls.

  • The Chick fil-A Bowl wishlist would include Florida State vs. South Carolina in a Bobby Bowden/Steve Spurrier coaching matchup.

  • The Gator Bowl would like to see Florida St., Miami, or Georgia Tech against a Big 12 team (barring a Notre Dame upset of Southern Cal). It would settle for FSU or Miami vs. Nebraska in a heartbeat.

  • The Champs Sports Bowl wouldn't mind taking either Miami or North Carolina against a Big Ten team.

  • The Meineke Car Care Bowl wants a North Carolina-based team, which means the Tar Heels, Wake Forest, or North Carolina St. vs a Big East team (probably Rutgers).

    1. "They will play in the Orange Bowl in Miami as the ACC champion against the Big East champion, which right now looks like Cincinnati or possibly Utah. But that would be a long shot."

I have no idea what the above means...beginning second sentence (any sentence) with "but" is a no-no. What (exactly) would be the long shot- playing Utah? Cincy being Big East champ?

    1. Was the long shot comment even necessary? Everyone knows you don't care for the Eagles. Not that the public expects you to be a homer, but your cynicism is hackneyed and downright unnecessary.

    1. In her chat today, espn.com's Heather Dinich confirmed that the ACC will force the Chick fil-A Bowl to take the loser of the ACC Championship game... which would seem to be a reasonable landing spot at this point.

Under the Orange Bowl scenario Blaudschun writes "But that would be a long shot." Does he mean playing Utah or BC getting to the Orange Bowl? Although I'd feel a lot better if Crane were playing, none of these teams are very good, BC has a real chance to finally get to the BCS promised land.

    1. Mark, please tell us just how large a ticket guarantee do the Peach Bowl and the Gator Bowl want? Then, BC fans know how big the bribe is to play on New Year's weekend.

This scam is getting putrid. It's not about how good your football team is. It's about how big the bribe is. If your college's share of the bowl pay-out is smaller than the dollar value of the ticket guarantee then the bowl committee comes out ahead. Which is the whole point.

    1. Music City Bowl, here we come; it figures that the year we could go to the Orange we play a non-marquee name like Cincinnatti.

    1. How sad the BC team is always on the outside looking in no matter how good they are. I am a Californian and have pulled for BC for many years, but it looks like the New England people just don't care about a College team being a National power. If the community somehow got behind them and attended away games Boston would have a powerhouse team year after year.

    1. I really hate the way BC is constantly lower on the bowl pecking order than it should be largely due to geographical location and the myth that the BC fanbase won't travel. BC shouldn't be penalized just because they're a team from a colder climate where nobody wants to have a bowl in December. In terms of the fanbase not traveling, it's sort of a "which came fist: chicken or the egg" problem. As a BC student I honestly would be far more inclined to travel for a bowl game if the Eagles got a better bowl game. There should be a more objective system for the bowl selection process.

    1. BC will lose this weekend and end up in Seattle.

If the fans traveled at all you would get a better bowl but they don't so sponsor don't want a stadium with most of the BC section empty.

    1. Who cares? Div 1 college athletics are out of proportion to what matters in life. It's a bunch of kids: Most are acedemically challenged, some excel and almost all will need to find another line of work if/when they graduate. Meineke Bowl? You've gotta be smokin' a bowl.
