Marinatto selected as new Big East Comissioner
After a four month search to find a replacement for retiring Big East commissioner Mike Tranghese, the Big East decided to stay in house and elevate senior associate commissioner John Marinatto. The final decision was made today at a meeting of Big East presidents in Philadelphia.
A press conference officially introducing Marinatto will be made Wednesday morning. The promotion of Marinatto, who joined the Big East staff in 2002, continues the linkage between the conference office and Providence College, with the league's first commissioner Dave Gavitt and Tranghese both having PC roots. Marinatto is from the same lineage, having served as sports information director and then athletic director for 15 years before moving to the Big East office in 2002 in an administrative capacity.
Tranghese announced his retirement last June and is expected to remain through the spring before Marinatto takes full control.

Hopefully Marinatto will not preside over a split between the I-A football schools and the others. And hopefully the Gavitts will have major input into how the league functions. Finally, hopefully the league will loosen up its officiating style in men's basketball and let the kids play, not get hung up on player-control fouls a la A.C.C., and overlap its officiating crews with Big 10 folks. Less New York/New Jersey/New England influence, more from Pennsylvania and the Midwest. Makes for less tedium in the game.
when do we split - i can't imagine this hire will improve the football side
Good work Mark--breaking the Big East story. It's nice to see you break away from the ACC beat from time to time. Just out of curiosity, do you still have a press credential at BC? Or did they take it away--you know, to make room for reporters who actually cover the local team?
When was the last time you actually broke something newsworthy from Chestnut Hill? Honestly, nothing comes to mind...
But keep up the good work. Boston fans will need a good Big East reporter to cover those teams when the conference is no longer BCS eligible in 5 years.
Don't know much about the man, but was hoping for some "new blood" to come in and lead this conference. This decision could greatly accelerate the Football schools to look at splitting off. Maybe that was the reason for the decision. It will be an interesting 18-24 months in the BE front offices.
After a four month search this is the best choice they can come up with? Something is rotten in Providence. Ugh.
