BCS Final Exams

Posted by Mark Blaudschun, Globe Staff December 6, 2008 07:08 AM

BCS. BCS. BCS. By now you probably have had your fill of BCS talk and the possibilities of what could happen in the next two days to set up the BCS title game match-up in Miami on January 8.
For Boston College, the path is clear cut. Beat Virginia Tech in today's ACC title game and the Eagles will be in the Orange Bowl on January 1 to play Big East champion Cincinnati. If the Eagles lose, they will head to the Music City Bowl in Nashville, Tenn. for a New Year's eve date with an SEC team (probably Kentucky).
But for the rest of the BCS hopefuls--No. 1 Alabama and No 2 Florida ,who will play this afternoon in the SEC title game, or No.3 Oklahoma, which faces Missouri in the Big 12 title game or No 4 Texas, waiting at home in Austin, Texas for some miracle (a Missouri win over Oklahoma) which will get them a seat at the table in the title game--it will be a matter of waiting until Sunday night when the BCS computers spit out the final numbers.
We know about the two human polls--Harris and USA Today Coaches--which comprise one element of the BCS rankings. But what about the computer side?
What do we know?
We know there are 6 computer rankings
1. Colley Matrix
2. Wolfe
3. Sagarin
4. Anderson-Hester
5. Billingsley
6. Massey.
But who and what are they?
Well, we will give you the condensed version.
1. Colley--Wes Colley is a rocket scientist (actually astro physicist) who has a passion for numbers and college football
2.Dr. Peter Wolfe--is an infectious disease specialist at UCLA
3. Jeff Sagarain--perhaps the most famous of the computer gurus, is a graduate of MIT
4. Anderson-Hester. Two University of Washington graduates. Jeff Anderson is a political science teacher and Chris Hester is a sports broadcaster in the Seattle area..
5. Richard Billingsley--the only non-college graduate among the group lives in a small town in Oklahoma, was a stress management consultant, who now sits in his recliner (clicker) in hand and watches as many as 25 games each weekend.
6. Ken Massey--a math professor and self processed huge Virginia Tech fan.
All of them are computer geeks and college football fans and have been commissoned by the BCS for data on determining the best college football teams in the country.

There you have it folks, the people and computers which will determine your world of college football over the holidays.
Enjoy.
