BC makes it official: Jagodzinski fired

Posted by Adam Kilgore, Globe Staff January 7, 2009 02:54 PM

School spokespersons just passed out a press release to reporters titled, "Boston College Terminates Employment of Football Coach Jeff Jagodzinski," meaning the firing is official.

Jagodzinski, who is not present, made a statement in the release: "My family and I have enjoyed and cherished being of this great community. I would like to thank many people, especially Father Leahy and [Athletic Director] Gene DeFilippo, for the privilege to work here. I am so proud what our student-athletes and our staff has accomplished during our tenure here. I wish everyone at Boston College the best in the years to come, both on and off the field."

The release states Jagodzinski, who won 20 games in two seasons at BC, was "terminated without cause," but does not comment on the specifics of his contract. The search for a replacement will include internal and external candidates.

"As I said the last time we did this [had to hire a coach], the time framework will be that we're going to go quick, but we're not going to hurry," DeFilippo said during his introductory comments at the 3 p.m. press conference. "And we're going to find somebody who really wants to be at Boston College and who is going to be here for the length of their contract."

DeFilippo added that the decision to fire Jagodzinski was his own.

"I want to go on record as saying that the decision was mine," DeFilippo said. "I am the director of athletics, I made the decision. I asked for approval from the administration, and they gave me that approval, and I made this decision because I think that Jeff and I were really divided on the future of this program and what we wanted for the program, and with that in mind, this decision has been made.

"I love Jags. I'm not going to say anything bad about Jags. He was a really good friend when he came here, and we're still really good friends."

  1. Haaaaahhaaaa!! Boston College football is a joke. the guy takes you from nothing to number two in the nation last year. your insecurity is a laugh riot!
go hire some 'lifer' from high school ball that will bow to administration. just don't expect to appear in any bowl games. that guy was a score BC. dumb dumb dumb.

  1. WHO CARES! Do these people know that the country, in fact the world is falling apart at the seams. People are losing their homes. Around the world people are starving. People are dying needlessly in senseless wars. Do I really care about what's going on at BC? NO!

  1. The key to the press release is that the Coach was terminated "without cause." That means there was nothing in his written contract with BC that prevented an interview with the Jets. It also means that the school is on the hook for at least his base salary for the remaining term, if not more.

  1. This is nothing typical of BC.....they turn on their own like a bunch of pit bulls....no surprise here.

  1. About time.....NEXT PLEASE. This story got too much play for something that was a done deal

  1. It will be interesting to see if DeFilippo hires (or interviews) a coach who is still under contract to another institution or organization.

  1. As a BC alum- I am happy that coach Jagz has been fired. BC needs a coach who will be committed to BC football for the long-term, as well as recruit top athletes to strengthen the program and hopefully win the ACC and beat VT!

  1. Buddies for life? I don't think the current state of affairs will cement a friendship. As AD why would the direction for the program at BC be so divided? Shouldn't the AD set the tone and the Coach implement the plan?

  1. BC is BUSH LEAGUE....

  1. 1st

So... everytime you have a coach that even goes on an interview, you're going to fire them? Since you fired him without cause, and it wasn't in writing that he couldn't interview, does BC have to eat the rest of the contract and pay him for 3 years?

I thought this was a premier institution in the Northeast? Ya know, it's cool to BC but it sucks to BU... that whole thing. This is a pretty dumb decision.

  1. Rivals.com is reporting 4 star recruit from Willmington, DE has re-thought his decision to come to BC today, as a result, of the chaos in Coaching change and announced he will attend Virginia Tech ... he comes the fall out Gene DeFlippo

  1. Good riddance Jag-off. Any man who can't honor his word doesn't deserve to coach at BC. If I were a NFL owner I'd never hire you and I hope none do. How you'll ever look someone in the eye, shake their hand and make them a promise ever again. Shameful what you did to those kids that just came in and you promised you be coaching the next 4 years. Rot in hell

  1. Good for BC on this one. When a coach takes a contract, they should fulfill their commitment, and beyond that, and more importantly, when you look in the eyes of a recruit and tell him you will be here to see him graduate, you should mean it.

  1. All this over an interview...good God. DeFillipo comes off looking like a petty jerk, which doesn't reflect too well on BC. Jags may have gotten the better end of this deal.

  1. Probably will be hired at the turnpike authority !

Posted by Wilbur January 7, 09 03:34 PM
  1. What an idiot . Why would you fire a coach with his record , just to make a point that you're the director> What is the recruiting going to look like when you FIRE a coach with a winning record just because he looked into another job?

Posted by maggie January 7, 09 03:34 PM
  1. BC shows it has the POWER over the little guy. It's a Catholic institution. Jag is Lucky that's all they did to him.

Posted by crismelo January 7, 09 03:35 PM
  1. Well this is the first time BC Football has gotten any attention so they should enjoy it!

  1. Loyalty is completely lacking in sports. Money rules! I have been a sports fan for, probably 65 of my 70 years, and my biggest disappointment has probably been watching the sports turn into a business It has even hit amateur athletics. Look at the Olympics, Pee Wee hockey, and MLB. Jags, it's not your fault, after all it's "just a business".

It really won't be long before all organized sports evolve back to a previous era. No one will be able to afford attending an event. That includes the overpaid athletes and their management.

Posted by Sportsfan January 7, 09 03:39 PM
  1. Hypocrites. Gene needs to put down his ego and realize that Jags just did to BC what BC did to the Big East.

    Posted by Tom M January 7, 09 03:42 PM
  1. Thee must be something more to this. To fire a coach because he talks to another team is ridiculous. Since when does an AD have to give permission for one of his coaches to talk to whomever they want to?

    Posted by J. Brown January 7, 09 03:44 PM
  1. At first the press release makes DiFlippio look like a Hitler. However when you read on all DiFippio wanted to do was have Coach Jags honer his contract . It' seems that Honor is not found in too many vocabularies of Coach's or Players today. They are as bad as Politicians. So Diflipp was correct in telling Jags to take a Hike!

Posted by Richie Simonetti January 7, 09 03:44 PM
  1. So...DeFilippo was upset at Jags not honoring his contract? Sort of the way BC didn't honor their contract when they bolted the Big East for the ACC???? Hmmmm......

  1. BC athletics must be run by idiots. One must also realize athletic directors are a dime a dozen while good football coaches are rare

  1. 20 wins in two years. What direction did he want him to go?
    20 losses in two years?
Egomaniac; every sentence began with "I".

  1. Good luck Jags. Too bad you couldnt stay. Its nice to have a change of pace here at BC with young energetic coaches who play to win games. Im sure you will pop up at some other larger college or back in the pros.

  1. Jags did a great job with Coach O'Brien's players. Considering the support from the AD it is easy to see why O'Brien left BC. Maybe the next coach will be more appreciative of the "honor" of coaching at Boston College. (Not!)

  1. Who cares? BC is irrelevant.

Posted by BostonThug January 7, 09 04:07 PM
  1. I think BC's jumped the gun on this one, when the previous coach went to North Carolina they didn't react in this fashion ,bad move B.C Jags may have recommended other pro assists wanting to coach at college level . now its bitter.

  1. Mr. DeFilipo had to take this action, his hand was forced by Coach Jagodzinski, who broke his contract - period. Once the contract was broken, Mr. DeFilipo had to execute and move to dismiss his Head Foootball Coach, much like a child is punished for a wrongdoing, in order to show that BC means what they say, and show any future coaches that they are serious about getting a coach that will stay for the long haul. Hear that Mark Whipple? BC wants you to come back to Massachusetts, and stay here for a long time. You are a College Coach at heart, so leave the Philly Eagles and come take your own Eagles team to many an ACC Campionship! Ok Mr. Whipple? BC should have taken you two years ago.

  1. I'd like to know how the AD thinks this firing will help him find quality coaches whose ambition and talent will make BC merely a stop along the way to bigger and better positions. Who, of these type of coaches, would accept a position knowing that his boss engages in such strong arm tactics and would impede his upward mobility?? Seems to me that lesser coaches are the only ones who would accept working for such a man.

Win the battle, lose the war. Great thinking!

Posted by rsb January 7, 09 04:27 PM

  1. And now they should either fire DeFlippo and get a real AD who will do what it takes to take BC to the next level of College football or become Harvard and play in an ivy league.

All I can say is BWAH HA HA!!!!! Fools thinking "Jags" was nothing more than a Jag-off who wanted to stay at BC for 5 years, sucker please.

  1. My favorite part of being a BC fan and alum is the agitation that the university excites in the local unwashed; the apoplexy exhibitions are really a hoot!

Anyway, let it firstly be known that BC did NOT violate its contract when it vacated the Big East.

More importantly, Gene should be congratulated for doing the right thing here; Jags' heart clearly wasn't in what is a particularly difficult job, given BC's academics, location, conference, and (largely fulfilled) high expectations, and clearly never would be.

Here's hoping that Spaz gets a good look at the position, but either way, here's hoping that the program will be able to make a quick recovery from this stumble, so that the envious rants of all of the local unwashed can continue to be fed.

    GOBC!!!!

  1. As a BC fan from the Midwest, I support the actions of BC and Gene D. Among other things, a "powder puff" offense goes with him and maybe Steve Logan goes on the same freight train.

  1. First, Jags did not violate anything in his contract. HE DID NOT BREAK ANY RULES, read the article. Second, why is everyone up in arms over loyalty? I'm sorry, but if a pro football team came to Mr DeFilippo to make him their GM, would he not listen? Would he not sit down and at least hear what they had to say? Would anyone with a huge job opportunity blindly pass on it? Please. Jags would be a fool if he didn't interview for this job. It is no wonder O'brien left for NC State. Good luck BC. Have fun against a resurging FSU and Miami next year. Have fun in the "Nobody cares about you anymore" Bowl!

  1. Go figure, a man tries to better his positioning in life with a better job and sure enough he gets fired from it. This is why no one will ever take BC seriously and will always and forever be a stepping-stone school. I'm from the Boston area and when my kids are ready to apply for colleges next year, I do not want them going here because if they treat their workers this way, who's to say how they'll treat their students? Terrible and disrespectful school.
