No word yet on Jagodzinski
Boston College officials said they have not had contact with football coach Jeff Jagodzinski today, but that as of noon, he had not been fired.
However, the possiblity of that happenining was still very strong if Jagodzinski was indeed talking to the New York Jets about their vacant head coaching position, as has been reported in several outlets. ESPN.com reported this afternoon that Jagodzinski does intend on following through with the interview with the Jets, which is scheduled for tonight.
"Right now, everything is quiet," said BC media relations director Chris Cameron this afternoon. "We have no press conferences scheduled and we still have a football coach."
Jagodzinski contacted members of his staff Sunday telling them he had a decision to make and that the situation would be resolved by tomorrow.
When contacted last night BC athletic director Gene DeFilippo said, "You'll have to talk to Jeff Jagodzinski. It was his initiative."
Although Jagodzinski is not regarded as the leading candidate for the Jets job, the second-year BC coach does have ties with Jets quarterback Brett Favre, who may have used his influence to get Jagodzinski on what has turned into a lengthy list of candidates to replace Eric Mangini, who was fired a week ago.
The story began evolving several days ago when Jagodzinski's name surfaced in published reports as a candidate, which was news to BC officials, who dismissed the reports since no one from the Jets had sought permission to speak with Jagodzinski.
When school officials asked Jagodzinski about the reports, the coach told them he had been contacted by the Jets and he was considering interviewing to gauge their interest. According to ESPN.com's report today, "the school is concerned that the Jets' interview could be the beginning of a trend for Jagodzinski where he will try to get an NFL job."
Jagodzinski has led BC to back-to-back Atlantic Coast Conference Atlantic Division titles, but his recent pedigree has been in the NFL, where he had been an assistant since 1999. Included in that period were two stints with Favre in Green Bay. Jagodzinski served as the Packers' offensive coordinator in 2006 just before moving to the Heights.

Type your comment here...If his contract does indeed have a clause prohibiting him from interviewing for other positions during the first three years, then Jags has violated the trust of university officials and players. His actions, regardless of the outcome, have a very negative impact on current recruiting. Apparently he doesn't care. We need more coaches like York and Skinner whose committment to the students they recruoted are inviolate. Tell Jags to clean out his office and send a message to others like him. Appoint Spaz as the new coach.
Petty, petty Boston College. Why and how BC alums put up with this kind of ridiculous behavior from the Athletic Director is beyond me. This pretty much solidifies that no reputable coach will ever again choose to work at BC. Why would you? People across this country every day test employment waters outside their current employer in the hopes of bettering their life / earning more money / moving closer to family / etc. For BC to fire someone for it is elitist, petty & wrong.
Since when does a school fire someone just for interviewing? Say he doesn't get the job (not an unreasonable guess), but they fire him anyway. He's out on the street with no job at all. It seems vindictive to say the least, and certainly not the way we should expect an institution that is supposedly run on Christian principles to behave.
great...the guy is a clown living off of tom o'brien's recruits. let him go jobless and let steve logan take over...
Gene DiFillipo is nuts if he fires a guy for trying to improve his career! BC Football is turning into a complete JOKE!
What is the big deal. The BC head coach should be able to interview for the Jets job unless his contract stipulates that he is prevented from interviewing for ANY other coaching job. He's done a great job for BC and they should have enough sense to allow him to explore this opportunity.
BC has a football team?
I'm a pretty big BC fan for a non Alum. I was unsure about Jagz when he was hired but did like that B.C. Seemed to have a wide ranging search and saw alot of potential. So far it seems to have worked out very well although it remains to be seen if he is truly the guy who can take this middling College football team to a higher level dare I say potentially even elite. Kudos to BC for the hire it was bold and things seem to be looking up. Boo to BC for whining like babies. First of all he is a fringe candidate who probably is not going to get this job. Why cry and back yourself into a corner because other clearly more prominent teams, like the guy you picked and how he is developing. If you let this go I believe he comes back and has even more pull in recruiting. Yes there is the potential students concern that he may leave for the NFL, but that is outweighed by the fact that NFL teams are showing that they believe in this coach and moreover that the things you will learn in his systems theoretically will prepare you for the pro game. Do they really believe that firing their coach because of this type of interest will give there current players and future recruits more confidence about BC's continuity and strength in the future. I think not this was simply a Tantrum worthy of my two year old daughter and it makes me fear, as a fan, for the future of BC Football.
Its too bad, but I guess BC wants some stability with the head coach. I'm hoping the rumors aren't true that Logan will be the new head coach. His play calling has been borderline terrible without Matt Ryan to make both him and Jags look good. And before we give Jags too much credit for what BC has done the last couple of years, he did it with mostly O'Brien recruits. I want to know why the Jets would be trying to please Favre? The way he played toward the end of the year I'd be encouraging him to retire!
i think jags sees the writing on the wall: Dominique Davis is NOT a college quarterback.
How about some actual reporting on this? For example, does Jag's contract include a clause prohibiting him from talking to NFL teams before he's completed three seasons with BC?
Firing him for an interview seems a little harsh to me. I could see maybe a fine or something but that's it.
BC stands up to this punk who demanded and was granted an extension and raise for 4 years. He hasn't even got to coach his own recruits. What a sell out. Honor your contract biitch. Big BC FAN!
Good for BC's A.D. It really is tiring watching these coaches come into programs and use schools like BC as stepping stones to get a better paycheck. Where is the loyalty? When Jack Bicknell was coaching during the Flutie years he could have cashed in at schools like Ohio State but he decided to do the right thing and stay at the school that gave him his big chance. Hold your ground Gene and move on because if you don't he will at any better offer that comes along.
Good luck Jags... No one (including BC alumni like myself) will blame you for going after what is the goal of every football coach. However, as a Pats fan, I will never be able to support you.
As far as DeFilippo's comment on firing him if he talks to the Jets, I would say it's just another reason I'll be ecstatic when Gene leaves the Heights for good. BC Athletics needs a leader and catalyst, not some crusty "has-been" with an ego bigger than Alumni Stadium.
