BC must move quickly

Posted by Mark Blaudschun, Globe Staff January 8, 2009 10:32 AM

ANALYSIS

Boston College athletic director Gene DeFilippo began the business of finding a new head football coach this morning. Former coach Jeff Jagodzinski, who was fired by DeFilippo Wednesday morning, met with his former staff last night to say his goodbyes.

DeFilippo says he has started a search that will include candidates outside the staff. The question is: Why? The only reason to do that is if you feel that the on-staff people you have aren't good enough. That is not true in this instance, especially regarding what BC wants to be and where it wants to go.

Both assistant head coach Jack Bicknell Jr. and defensive coordinator Frank Spaziani meet the qualifications. So does offensive coordinator Steve Logan. If any of those men express an interest, DeFilippo should pick the person he feels is the best and move on. DeFilippo is expected to do that later today in one sense, when he chooses an interim head coach. Sources close to the program said this afternoon that the choice will be Spaziani.

Ideally, the interim tag could be taken off in a few days, after BC and Spaziani can get comfortable with the new role and judge the reaction internally -- which already has been overwhelmingly positive.

"What BC needs in football is the equivalent of Jerry York [the Eagles' hockey coach]," said one source close to the program. "And Frank Spaziani would be that guy.''

Whether or not Spaziani gets the permanent job, this much is certain: BC needs to move quickly with the entire process. The recruiting season is in its final stages and BC is getting trounced right now. Even the recruits who are leaning toward BC are wavering as they watch to see who is commanding the ship.

BC cannot afford any lag time here. They need a new coach right now. By going outside the box, DeFilippo is sending a message that says the guys on staff aren't good enough.
An added danger here is that if you do hire someone from outside, you are going to lose everyone inside.

When DeFilippo hired Jagodzinski two years ago he caught a break in keeping several members of Tom O'Brien's staff, including Spaziani and linebackers coach Billy McGovern.

That's not going to happen this time, especially for someone like Spaziani, who is the best candidate on staff. Spaziani is as loyal to BC as anyone, but he is not an ornament that can be moved around with a new head coach. He applied last time and was passed over. If he is passed over this time -- again, after being named the interim coach -- he will be gone. McGovern might also bolt, as will Bicknell and Logan and others on the staff since a new coach will not acquiesce as Jagodzinski did by agreeing to keep members of O'Brien's staff.

A new coach from outside the loop would want his own staff. And then it will be time to clean house completely, which is remarkable for a program that has won 30 games in the last three seasons.

So DeFilippo will start the process today. The tentative game plan will be to name Spaziani the interim coach, then conduct a quick search to see if any candidates emerge, and have the new coach in place by early next week so the recruiting process can resume.

The Eagles can still do it right if they act quickly.

If they don't, chaos is lurking around the corner. And the blame will fall on DeFilippo.

  1. yep he'll go outside and try and get another coach to break his contract to come and coach for BC..... how ironic. I can see al the assistants leaving and BC being at the bottom of the pack for a while. Now if you a major high school recruit are you really going to opt for BC over a football powwerhouse.

  1. Of the three you mentioned, Steve Logan is the only one with a proven, winning record with solid bowl wins while also running a clean program. He did that at East Carolina without a famous dad to help with recruiting, which is no mean feat. Ask Skip Holtz. I am sure the others are the "local favorites" but Logan is the one that will allow you to keep the continuity in the program since he and Jags are close. Keep in mind Jags served as HIS offensive coordinator at ECU. I think you will find that recruits wanting to play for Jags, are more likely to stay onboard if Logan is the choice. The main reason cited by many for the selection of Spaziani is that "he will stay". I think the main criteria should be who will win. With that said, Logan was presented numerous opportunities to leave ECU and did not. I think if the situation is right and the AD is not crazy, he will stay a long time since he has expressed enjoyment with working with the kind of student athlete that comes through BC. I think Logan is the one that provides the best chance of keeping the winning formula in place.

  1. If DeFilippo wanted somebody so committed to BC for the long term, he made a mistake in passing over Spaziani the last time. I fault DeFilippo for this mess not Jags. I think he shouldn't make the same mistake twice. I'd go with Spaziani.

  1. I disagree. Doing an internal and external search gives an extra vote of confidence to Spaz if he is the choice. He wouldn't just be a hasty internal hire to maintain continuity, but the best choice after an aggressive search and interviews with other excellent candidates. I do think its an insult to name Spaz "interim" HC. It's the off-season, and, unlike last time, there are no games to play in the next few weeks. Why the need for an interim HC at all? A broad search also cushions the decision from criticism of people who would want to go external, giving GDF a little more political capital to go with Spaz if he's the choice. We're going to get a great coach: either it's Spaz, or someone who is adjudged during the process to be better. GDF is not going to drag this out. We've already incurred some recruiting damage, but I don't think the week or two extra will hurt us substantially. Frankly, if Spaz is the choice I think he deserves a happy press conference where the focus is more on the hiring than the firing, so having a little time in between is a good thing.

  1. Spaziani is the clear choice and should be given the chance to lead the program. His defense has put up outstanding performances over the years and this year really carried the team. He will also add stability to the program.

  1. If he is going to make the new coach keep the staff, like he did the last time around he should hire within the cyrrent group. if not the new coach comming in should be able to establish his own coaching staff...

  1. Prediction: Look for Coach Murphy from Harvard to move on over.

  1. Jack Bicknell Jr has BC football in his blood. His father was a long term Head Coach and he is a former player. If BC is looking for someone who has loyalty to the organization then Bicknell JR. is the right candidate.

  1. Hire Spaziani as coach and then hire a high profile ex-pro, possibly an ex-BC player such as Doug Flutie to head recruitment and talk these candidates into coming to BC.

A big name with the right credentials can possibly recruit the right players!

  1. I think Gene owes it to the university to take a quick look around. BC needs to scan the horizon and see if some outstanding candidate wants to come to BC. If not move quickly and hire Spaziani, knowing that he will be gone into retirement in 5-6 years. Then BC will have time to search for candidates when they replace Spaz. By naming Spaz the interim coach now, BC is pretty much telling the other internal candidates that they won't be considered as serious candidates. Logan is as good as gone already -- back to the south and his radio program where he will likely smear BC over the airwaves every chance he gets; as a retaliation for the firing of his long time friend and protege.

  1. I think you are mistaken. It is common practice for any organization, be it sports, business, whatever, to consider outside candidates for a major hiring. It is simply due diligence on the part of management. I believe that DeFillipo is leaning towards, and ultimately will choose, Spaziani or Bicknell for the position. The AD would not be doing his job, however, if he did not compare their qualifications to those outside the organization. In addition, rather than just hand the reigns over immediately to one of the assistants, it gives Spaziani and Bicknell the chance to formulate a coherent plan for the future of BC football as they prepare for interviews.

  1. Anyone think about Bobby Johnson as potential head coach for BC? All he's done over the years is take Furman University to the DII finals a couple of times and forge a very competitive team at Vanderbuilt in the VERY tough SEC! Oh by the way, both Furman and Vandy's academic requirements rival those found in the heights! He a good recruiter and knows how to win with smart kids that may not be on the depth chart at some of the other ACC schools. One can only wonder if his wife, unlike Tex's wife, will like the shopping on Newbury street!

  1. Do you writers just make stuff up as you go? Looking outside the university does not mean that no one on the current staff isn't qualified. That is a stupid statement! BC is trying to find the MOST qualified. The only way they can do that is by expanding thier search. Your reasoning has some serious flaws.

  1. Hire Spaz he deserves it and will stay loyal. It's a no brainer the kids love him.

Posted by Spike January 8, 09 02:43 PM
  1. If he doesn't hire someone from the current staff, that means he'll be hiring someone under contract to another school most likely. Just like he hired Jagodzinski when he was under contract with Green Bay.

I wonder if Gene sees the hypocrisy in crying about loyalty and honoring contracts when he goes and hires someone who has to break a contract with someone else. I guess the contracts signed at BC are the only ones that should be honored in full.

  1. To dbcoach -- BC is a football powerhouse you jackass. ACCCG x 2 and 30 wins in 3 years.

  1. Coach Spaz is your man. He played under Joe Paterno. Not so coincidentally he is both loyal and competent to the core.

Posted by marzxyz January 8, 09 03:20 PM
  1. The urgency factor is completely WRONG and off base. Hiring the right coach is ten fold more important than this BC recruiting class. To rush to try and get a few kids at the margin would be a terrible decision. Rushing to a bad decision is no decision at all. Blaudschun has obviously never had any management responsibility. And he simply has never really understood college football.

  1. 1. Wake up call....None of your assistants are mentioned in national coaching searches. Why doesn't anyone else want them?
    2. You had the benefit of a weak ACC for three years.
    3. You don't hire a head coach because the players love him. You hire a head coach because the players and recruits respect him.
    4. Bobby Johnson would view it as a lateral move.
    5. Powerhouses can recruit in Florida and Texas.
    6. Hire an AD that always has a plan if his coach leaves.

  1. BC is an overrated school with elitist, entitled people who think they own this city. The only thing they own is an outdated stadium on the Boston-Newton line and a reputation that follows them - unglamorously.

  1. When TC came to BC I got excited. Not so with any other coach in the last 30 years. The fanbase was energized with Couglin. BC needs a coach that really wants to stick around, can coach like Belicek but also put some pizzazz in the program. One guy for some reason gives me that feeling: Mike London. I know the players love Spaz but is he the right guy?Gene cannot look at the smoothest transition he has to make the right transition.

  1. Ha BC is a powerhouse only in its mind and the minds of its limited fanbase.

As for a coaching recommendation, I'd go with Turner Gill of Buffalo. He lead the school to the MAC title and it's first bowl berth ever. Plus it would be nice to have a minority coach at a "major" program.

    Posted by redbarchetta88 January 8, 09 07:21 PM
  1. You need to consider the "minority rule" already noise has been made about not enough minorities as head coaches in NCAA.That is why the looking around .
yes Spaz and the others mentioned are real good candidates but................
we have to do the best thing for BC. an investigation as to how many minorities were interviewed would not be good for BC.

  1. BC grad here, class of '91. Spaziani is a good coach and a loyal guy but BC should look internally and externally to find someone who won't just maintain the status quo but instead take the team to the next level. Here's a novel recommendation that nobody seems to be offering: Want to quickly change the face of BC football, enhance recruitment in the very competitive ACC states, and show the university to be a visionary place? My recommendation is to seek out and hire one of the many talented and prominent national African-American assistant coaches or coordinators, like Florida's Charlie Strong, that no other schools have the integity to hire. That would put BC on the map and erase Jagodzinski from our memory.

  1. When Rick Pitino left Providence they hired asst. Gordie Chiesa who was considered the best asst coach in the country. Anyone know where he is these days. Spaz is a good DC, he is no HC or someone would have given him a chance over the last 35 years

  1. The critics of GDF and BC, as well as the writers at the Globe, should check with competent contract law attorneys. Contrary to the negative comments that BC won't let a coach leave for another job, Jags had a contract. In return for a guaranteed 5 year job, he was legally obligated to work for BC for that period.. This means he can't look for other jobs without the permission of his contracted employer. If he wanted to leave after one or two years, he should have signed a one or two year contract. The average worker doesn't have a contract with their employer; they can be let go at any time and they can leave at any time. They are not guaranteed salary beyond what they have already earned. That's the difference.

  1. This is all a little like Agatha Christie's "Mousetrap," where the police inspector (DeFillipo, my dear Watson) is interviewing all the insiders (Spaz, et al) to determine who the perpetrator is when the perp was the police inspector all along. So instead of letting DeFillipo hire anyone, he should be given the boot. Then let BC hire a competent AD and let him to hire the next coach.

  1. In a society where loyality seems in short supply- there are some people who demonstrate character over dollars and headlines. I hope BC keeps Coach Spaz , Billy McGovern, as well as coach Bick. All of those men truly represent "BC Family". RECRUITING! What an amazing job alums Jerry York and Greg Brown have done for this school.

  1. You have no idea how great of a HC Steve Logan would make here at BC. In his tenure at East Carolina, there was never a doubt about his coaching abilities. Bowls and bowl victories were almost a given every year. As an independent no less. The only reason he was let go at ECU was a very back handed AD.

He has proven himself as an excellent OC for the last two years and I am sure he would continue to do that job well in the future. His list of QB pupils' sucess speak for themselves as well.

Dave Garrard, Jeff Blake and Ryan, just to name 3. Passing over Logan would be a huge faux pas.

If BC wants to maintain a firm hold in the top of a quickly resurging ACC, then Logan has to be the guy.

    Go Eagles.

PS: Skip is not doing anything because of his father. He is doing it because he is a good coach, like Logan and Jagz
