Who is the Boston College quarterback? Does it really matter right now? We don't think so.

BC coach Frank Spaziani says he will make a decision -- and presumably an announcement -- later this week as to who will start in Saturday's Atlantic Coast Conference opener against Clemson.

Justin Tuggle? Dave Shinskie? Both have been good but not great in the Eagles' first two games against Northeastern and Kent State. Now Spaziani says he needs to make a decision and prepare one QB.

Why? Why not let everyone guess every week? The only thing he should do differently is keep the QB with a hot hand -- if he has one -- in the game. The mentality of the quarterbacks and the team is that the Eagles have co-QBs right now. There will be no grumbling, no second-guessing, because it is hard to first-guess anyone right now.

Neither Tuggle nor Shinskie has very much game experience -- two games for each. They get along. The team has adjusted. Let it ride.

Normally, we think two QB systems are bad. They rarely work in the long run. That might be the case this season at BC. But not now. Not yet.

Spaziani should keep the status quo for Clemson. Let Tuggle start and play until Clemson stops him on consecutive series. If he puts points on the board, let it ride. Keep him in there.

If both QBs are stopped, then make a choice as to who has been more effective and keep him in there for the remainder of the game. And then you can make a choice next week or the week after.

The object is to win games. Pure and simple. How you do it and who you do it with really doesn't matter.

Spaziani said it will take at least four or five more weeks before he has a true handle on the identity of his team. The same thinking applies to the quarterbacks. Let the battle go on a little longer. Let opposing teams try and prepare for two QBs with two different styles.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Right now the BC QB system ain't broke, so don't mess with it -- yet.
