Bentley's Cava nets Arthur Ashe Award

Bentley University senior Lorenzo Cava has been selected as the winner of the Intercollegiate Tennis Associationís Division 2 National Arthur Ashe Jr. Award for Leadership and Sportsmanship.

The native of Quito, Ecuador was already selected by the ITA as the Division II East Region Arthur Ashe Award winner on May 4. According to the ITA the award is given to individuals, "who have exhibited outstanding sportsmanship and leadership as well as scholastic, extracurricular and tennis achievements."

A team captain this season, Cava led the Falcons to both the Northeast-10 Conference regular season and tournament championships, as well as the programís first NCAA Tournament win on May 6. He was named the NE-10 Player of the Year after going a combined 22-0 in conference matches.

A management major, Cava also achieved one of the highest grade point averages on the team.

"Lorenzo is an outstanding player and a great leader who exemplifies sportsmanship,Ē said head coach Alex Wong. ďHe has been such an important part of our success due in large part to his leadership and he will be greatly missed.Ē

The ITA has Cava 28th in its most recent Division 2 national singles rankings and third in the east region. He finished the season with an overall record of 44-6 (26-1 singles, 18-5 doubles) and on a 20-match singles winning streak. He spent his first three collegiate seasons at Lynn University and was ranked in the top-10 at the end of each year, including No. 3 as a freshman and No. 1 as a sophomore.

Heís the second Falcon under Wong to receive the national Arthur Ashe Award, joining Kelly Nugent, won the womenís award in 2008.
