Mark Herzlich was talking about the present--or near future--this afternoon as he prepared for Boston College's game at Wake Forest on Saturday. But the BC senior linebacker whose football career went into eclipse last season as he battled cancer and has been only slowly returning to form this season as he dealt with a broken foot and a broken wrist, now can talk about the future--playing at the next level.

""My dad is starting to get some names of agents,''said Herzlich. "And I've been invited to the Senior Bowl) and then I'll start thinking about the (NFL) combine. So some things are going on.''

Herzlich said today that he feels as good as he has all season. And it has shown. He had his best performance of the year in last week's 16-10 win over Clemson. And he is intent on helping the Eagles make into a bowl game for the 12th straight season.

But after BC part of his career ends, Herzlich hopes that he can advance. The Senior Bowl is in January in Mobile, Alabama and the NFL scouting combine is Indianapolis.
A year ago such talk was more dream than reality.

Wide receiver and holder Billy Flutie was on crutches today with a pulled hamstring that could sideline him for a few more weeks. Offensive tackle Rich Lapham (left knee) is also out and BC coach Frank Spaziani said that Lapham was "week by week...Cornerback DeLeon Gause had surgery on his damaged left knee this afternoon, but the injury is not an ACL, so the timetable for Gause's return could be more short term than long term.
