After looking at all the angles--pros and cons--University of Connecticut athletic director Jeff Hathaway chose experience as a Big East head coach and at the FBS level as the deciding factor in choosing to hire former Syracuse coach Paul Pasqualoni over former University of Massachusetts coach Mark Whipple.
An official annouoncement is expected later this afternoon with a press confefence scheduled for tomorrow.
Word reached Whipple this afternoon that UConn had went with Pasqualoni, who went the National Football League rout in his career with the Miami Dolphins and Dallas Cowboys after being fired as the Orangemen's head coach in ..2004.
Pasqualoni also had stronger UConn routes than Whipple and received an endorsement from the Connecticut High School Coaches over the weekend which boosted his standing with Hathaway who conducted a quick, but intense search for a new coach after former UConn coach Randy Edsall resigned on January 2nd to take the job at the University of Maryland
After interviewing both men, Hathaway spent the past two days dissecting the credentials of each coach and what Hathaway felt would be the best fit.
Hathaway consulted with several football contacts about Whipple's and Pasqualoni's qualifications.
After finishing his interviews off campus, Hathaway presented his findings to UConn officials and made his recommendation to hire the 61-year old Pasqualoni, who comes to UConn from his role as the interim defensive coordinator for the Cowboys..
