Indiana: A lot of people were ready to write off the Tom Crean era but the Hoosiers are suddenly 8-0. Hold on.
Loyola of Maryland: My favorite nutjob coach Jimmy Patsos has his Greyhounds at 6-1 including a win over Siena in Albany.
Marquette: The Fightin’ McGuires are 7-0 after winning at Wisconsin.
Toledo: The Rockets at 6-1 after winning only four games in each of the last two seasons.
Tulane: The Green Wave haven’t been good since John “Hot Rod” Williams was playing and getting paid. Here they are 9-0 after beating Georgia Tech Saturday.
Dayton: How do you explain the Flyers? They win the DisneyWorld tournament then lose at home to Buffalo 84-55 and at Murray State 75-58. Talk about the bottom falling out.
Siena: The Saints, once the power of the MAAC, have lost five straight for the first time in six seasons.
Tennessee: The Vols have played a tough schedule but have lost four of their last five (the only win against Chaminade in Maui).
Utah State: The Aggies are perennially good for 20 wins but not this season. Their 33-game homecourt winning streak was ended by Denver last week; then they lost at Pacific Saturday. It was Pacific’s first victory over a Division 1 team.
Wisconsin: A lost week for the Badgers, losing at North Carolina and then at home to Marquette. The Marquette loss ended a 23-game homecourt winning streak.
This week’s George Mason: Iona, the Gaels won their first two in the MAAC pretty easily. They have a chance to run up a tremendous record. Undefeated Murray State is not far behind.
This week’s Final Four: North Carolina, Kentucky, Ohio State, Xavier. All four of these teams have been tremendous. I suspect Carolina would beat Kentucky on a neutral floor. Tough to pick among the three. X is rapidly becoming the kings of comeback after rallying from a 19-point deficit against Purdue.
This week’s national champion: North Carolina
