Lasell College senior Sean Bertanza passed away unexpectedly Dec. 20 at his home in Seymour, Conn. while on holiday break. On Wednesday, the high-scoring guard was named a first team all-conference selection by the coaches in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference.
“I think it’s a highly deserved honor,” said Aaron Galletta, in his seventh season as coach at Lasell, a Division 3 program in Newton. “It shows how much respect the coaches in our league had for Sean, and how special a player he was throughout his career.”
Bertanza, seventh on the program’s all-time scoring list (1,162 points in 59 games) averaged 20.6 points in the Lasers’ first nine games, including 28.7 ppg. in GNAC games.
As a sophomore in February of 2011, the 6-foot-2 Trinity Pawling graduate scored a program-record 55 points at St. Joseph’s of Maine, draining 22 of his 32 attempts from the field, including 5 of 7 from three-point range. It was highest scoring performance by any player across all divisions during the 2010-11 season. Galletta called it the “greatest shooting performance I have ever seen.”
