A breakthrough: The young BC Eagles had a big victory Tuesday night, outplaying a favored opponent, Maryland, and then closing out the game in an efficient manner for a 69-58 victory. This is the one BC fans will remember when this group of hard-playing, unselfish players start winning regularly next season. I like this group, especially Ryan Anderson and Olivier Hanlan, but itís hard for just about any team to overcome such youth and inexperience.
Tuesday night was a great night to watch college hoops; my finger was clicking furiously from one game to the next.
Indiana 72, Michigan State 68: A titanic physical battle and the result proves Indiana should be the favorite to win the national title. The Hoosiers met the challenge of Spartyís physical play and made some clutch plays to secure the victory. Overall, No. 1 seed should be theirs if disaster doesnít strike. Michigan State, on the other hand, has a difficult schedule ahead.
Miami 54, Virginia 50: For the second straight game, the Hurricanes found a way to win a tough game. I really like this groupís mental toughness. When they need a big basket, they get a good shot because they play together, the pieces fit naturally. In a tie game, you canít do much better than a Reggie Johnson layup right at the rim to take the lead for good.
Saint Louis 76, Virginia Commonwealth 62: The Billikensí suffocating defense totally frustrated the Rams. This game was over after 10 minutes. VCU couldnít get any good shots, nevertheless make them, and the Bills are improving offensively. They are the best team in the Atlantic 10 and an NCAA matchup no one should want. One of most underrated players in the nation is Saint Louis guard Jordaire Jett. He should be the Atlantic 10 defensive player of the year; he might even be the best defender in the nation. He disrupts offenses all by himself. Heís not graceful but he can provide some offense too.
Missouri 63, Florida 60: Missouri lost a game it should have won at Arkansas Saturday and Florida did the same thing in Columbia Tuesday night. The Gators had control of the game and when Missouri made its run, they just continued to jack up threes, lost their composure and the game. It will be a good lesson learned and might help them in the long run.
Other interesting results that I couldnít watch or only checked on briefly:
Tennessee 82, LSU 82: A solid homecourt win as the Vols continue to evolve nicely.
NC State 84, Florida State 66: The Wolfpack are either Final Four material or first-round upset fodder. Tuesday night was a good night.
Butler 68, Duquesne 49: The Bulldogs needed this big win.
Wichita State 66, Indiana State 62: The Shockers took care of business on the road their last two games.
BYU 70, Utah State 68: I did see the very end, a buzzer beater to win a big rivalry game.
San Diego State 79, Wyoming 51: A dominating home win that the Aztecs needed (just like Butler).
