Bill Heffernan’s opportunity to qualify for the US Senior Amateur golf tournament for the first time was slipping away in a qualifer at Segregansett Country Club in Taunton.
“It’s a tough field and I thought I’d have to shoot par to have a chance,’’ said the 59-year-old Dover resident, who struggled over the first nine holes with a 39.
But Heffernan, a four-time national champion sailor out of Corinthian Yacht Club in Marblehead, saved par at 10 and then went on a tear to post a 34 on the back side.
His 1-over 73 tied for third and placed him among the six qualifiers.
Heffernan is two-time senior club champ at Dedham Country & Polo Club and former golf captain at Wellesley High and Franklin Pierce University.
