Towson’s Terrance West ran for 156 yards and two touchdowns and the Tigers upset Connecticut, 33-18, Thursday night in the teams’ season opener at Rentschler Field in East Hartford.
Towson had never beaten a team from the Bowl Subdivision, and UConn had not lost to a Championship Subdivision team since 2001, when the Huskies were making the transition from Division 1-AA to Division 1. Towson is ranked 11th in the FCS.
West had a career-high 36 carries and put the game away with two fourth-quarter scores. Peter Athens threw for 192 yards and another score, and running back Sterlin Phifer caught a 23-yard touchdown and ran for another.
