 Penn State made a surprise announcement to retire former star running back John Cappelletti’s No. 22 during a halftime ceremony honoring the perfect 1973 team. Cappelletti became Penn State’s only Heisman Trophy winner that season by helping to lead the Nittany Lions to a 12-0 season and an Orange Bowl win over LSU, but failed to win the national title. As the ceremony drew to a close, Penn State announced it will be retiring Cappelletti’s jersey No. 22. It is the first time a jersey in any sport has been retired at Penn State.
